About The Position

We are seeking a highly skilled Materials Lab Technician to join our high-performance motorsports organization focused on the design, development, and manufacture of next-generation Formula 1 Power Units. Our Materials Laboratory will play a critical role in supporting rapid development cycles, failure analysis, and advanced materials research in one of the most demanding engineering environments in the world. The ideal candidate will have prior exposure working in a materials and/or metallurgical lab environment and experience with sample preparation and metallography, optical and scanning electron microscopy, chemical analysis methods, and hardness testing.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Demonstrated experience with metallographic specimen preparation and microstructural evaluation.
  • Proficient using optical microscopes for materials analysis.
  • Working knowledge of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical procedures consistently.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on laboratory environment.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and best practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in failure analysis or materials characterization for high-performance or aerospace/motorsports applications.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with standard industry test methods (e.g., ASTM, ISO)
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes, materials, and microstructures.
  • Experience in a fast-paced development environment with tight timelines.

Responsibilities

  • Perform specimen preparation for metallographic analysis, including sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, and etching.
  • Conduct optical microscopy examinations to evaluate microstructure, defects, coatings, and surface conditions.
  • Perform macro- and micro-hardness testing for quality inspection or failure analysis.
  • Operate a scanning electron microscope (SEM) for microstructural analysis and fracture/failure investigations.
  • Support materials characterization and failure analysis efforts for Power Unit components and test hardware.
  • Work with a broad range of materials, including metallic alloys, ceramics, and polymers.
  • Accurately document test methods, observations, and results in technical reports and databases.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, consumables, and safe working practices.
  • Collaborate closely with materials engineers, design engineers, and manufacturing teams to support rapid development cycles.
  • Support continuous improvement of laboratory processes, procedures, and capabilities.
