The Senior Automation/Controls Engineer plays a pivotal leadership role in addressing complex engineering challenges, particularly in the realm of automation and controls. This position is based 100% onsite in Salt Lake City, Utah, and is classified as exempt under FLSA guidelines. The engineer will be responsible for providing innovative solutions to enhance machine performance, including upgrades and the creation of machine specifications. A significant aspect of this role involves collaborating with various business units to support their needs, particularly in areas such as data collection, scrap reduction, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) improvements. In this role, the engineer will leverage extensive experience with high-volume fully automated production machines. The responsibilities include hands-on work with machine design, fixture design, and various automation technologies such as pneumatic actuators, servos, stepper motors, and vision systems. The engineer will also be expected to have a strong background in PLC control systems, particularly with Allen Bradley, and be proficient in electrical hardware, schematics, and wiring. Networking and automatic data acquisition are also critical components of the job. The Senior Automation/Controls Engineer will be tasked with determining machine requirements, evaluating needs, and translating them into feasible and economical equipment solutions. This includes reverse engineering, tooling specifications, and creating both 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks. The role requires a solid understanding of lean manufacturing principles, focusing on yield improvements, machine uptime, and reduction of scrap and changeover times. Additionally, the engineer will support process validation efforts and apply Six Sigma methodologies to enhance operational efficiency. Effective communication is essential, as the engineer will need to articulate concepts, challenges, and project plans to stakeholders at all levels of the organization. The position also involves managing project plans, tracking progress electronically, and utilizing project management tools to ensure successful program execution.
