About The Position

Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy. Toast Hardware powers our in-restaurant experience across payments, point-of-sale, kitchen display systems, and handheld devices. As Toast continues to develop new products and expand internationally, ensuring our products can be compliantly manufactured, shipped, and sold across global markets is increasingly critical. The Senior Manager, Trade and Hardware Compliance sits within the Compliance organization and plays a pivotal role in defining and scaling Toast’s hardware and trade compliance posture. This role owns hardware regulatory and trade compliance end-to-end and partners closely with our hardware product and operations teams to ensure our products can move across borders and be sold into market efficiently and compliantly. This is a senior, technically fluent role for a compliance leader who has operated in complex, global hardware environments and knows how to identify risk, close gaps, and build durable programs that scale. A day in the life (Responsibilities): As Senior Manager, Trade and Hardware Compliance, you will be the primary owner of hardware regulatory and trade compliance at Toast. You’ll establish a clear understanding of where Toast hardware is developed and sold today, where we are exposed to risk, and what must be done to safely scale our hardware footprint globally. You are a systems-minded operator who can translate evolving regulations into clear requirements for product and supply chain teams. You’ll bring order to fragmented processes, surface unknown risks, and influence hardware decisions early in the development lifecycle.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in hardware regulatory and trade compliance, product compliance, or compliance engineering within complex, global hardware environments.
  • Demonstrated experience owning regulatory compliance for physical products across multiple markets, including certifications, testing, and ongoing reporting requirements.
  • Strong technical fluency, ideally supported by an engineering degree or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Proven ability to conduct compliance audits and risk assessments, identify gaps, and drive remediation in ambiguous or evolving environments.
  • Experience partnering closely with supply chain and logistics teams to support global hardware movement.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication and influence skills; able to translate regulatory complexity into clear, practical guidance.
  • Comfortable operating with incomplete information and making judgment calls based on analysis and risk assessment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in highly regulated and large-scale/global technology companies.
  • Experience supporting international expansion and multi-year hardware product lifecycles.
  • Prior people leadership or the desire to build and lead a compliance team over time.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and own the hardware regulatory and trade compliance program end-to-end: build a compliance program to support Toast’s efforts to legally import, export, and sell hardware across domestic and new international markets, including certifications, filings, disclosures, and ongoing reporting obligations.
  • Conduct comprehensive and holistic compliance audits and risk assessments of current practices: assess current products, SKUs, markets, and certifications; identify gaps, emerging risks, and mitigation plans; and establish a clear baseline compliance posture.
  • Partner closely with hardware product, operations and supply-chain teams: collaborate across the organization on product standards and certifications, import/export requirements, classification, and cross-border movement of hardware, while maintaining clear ownership of regulatory obligations.
  • Provide guidance on necessary registration and import/export licenses required for current and future markets.
  • Influence hardware design: advise product and operations teams on regulatory implications of design decisions, safety and radio/FCC requirements, environmental and chemical regulations, and SKU proliferation.
  • Navigate evolving global regulations: stay ahead of rapidly changing hardware, environmental, sustainability, and reporting requirements (e.g., FCC, EU regulations, domestic state-level requirements) and translate them into actionable guidance.
  • Establish scalable compliance systems: build repeatable processes, documentation standards, and ownership models that scale with global growth.
  • Serve as a cross-functional leader: partner with Product, Hardware Engineering, Supply Chain, Operations, Legal, and external logistics partners to ensure compliance is embedded throughout the hardware lifecycle.
  • Manage external partners and advisors: work effectively with testing labs, certification bodies, logistics partners, and external consultants while retaining internal ownership of compliance strategy and decision-making.
  • Create visibility and accountability: develop clear reporting, documentation, and visibility into compliance status, risks, and remediation progress.
