The Senior Manager of Technical Services is a strategic and technical leadership role responsible for overseeing all technical support functions within the genomics laboratory. This individual plays a pivotal leadership role in ensuring seamless operation, technical excellence, and continuous improvement of laboratory systems and instrumentation within a high-throughput genomics environment. Working cross-functionally with laboratory operations, R&D, quality assurance, and IT, the Senior Manager of Technical Services will oversee the technical infrastructure required to deliver accurate, timely, and scalable genomic testing services. This role is also accountable for developing and executing strategies to enhance system reliability, drive process innovation, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, ISO15189). The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader with deep technical knowledge, operational acumen, and a passion for advancing genomic science through robust technical support.

  • Oversee the performance, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory instrumentation, including NGS platforms, Hamilton liquid handling systems, PCR instruments, and other critical lab equipment that support high-throughput genomic testing.
  • Oversee the deployment, validation, qualification, and optimization of complex laboratory technologies.
  • Responsible for all aspects of environmental monitoring, including the implementation, maintenance and calibration of the remote temperature monitoring system.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance, calibration, validation, and service activities for all critical instruments and systems.
  • Manage vendor relationships, including service contracts, preventative maintenance schedules, and technical support escalation paths.
  • Oversee procurement and implementation of new equipment, ensuring alignment with lab needs and technical requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements (e.g., CLIA, CAP, ISO) through robust documentation, equipment tracking, and audit readiness.
  • Ensure validation and verification activities meet applicable regulatory and quality standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP, ISO 15189).
  • Provide technical support during development and optimization of genomic assays.
  • Serve as a technical subject matter expert (SME) during audits and inspections.
  • Lead investigations into instrument-related deviations or failures, ensuring timely root cause analysis, CAPA implementation, and communication of findings.
  • Serve as a bridge between technical services, lab operations, IT, R&D, and quality teams to ensure cohesive workflow integration and rapid issue resolution.
  • Partner with R&D and laboratory operations to transfer, scale, and validate new methods and workflows into production environments.
  • Collaborate with IT and informatics teams to support integration of laboratory instruments with LIMS and other digital systems.
  • Implement and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) related to instrument uptime, service response time, and system reliability.
  • Apply Lean, Six Sigma, or other quality improvement methodologies to optimize lab efficiency and reduce variability.
  • Drive technical process improvements through data-driven analysis, root cause investigations, and cross-functional collaboration and proactively identify and mitigate technical risks to minimize disruption to laboratory operations.
  • Lead efforts to evaluate, select, and implement new technologies or instrumentation that enhance lab capabilities and throughput.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing Technical Services team, including engineers, technicians, and scientific support staff.
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and professional development to support team growth and technical competency.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Collaborate with laboratory operations leadership to develop and maintain yearly approved budgets.
  • Minimum of 7 years progressive experience in a genomics, molecular diagnostics, or biotechnology laboratory.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a leadership or management role, preferably overseeing technical support or instrumentation teams in a regulated lab setting.
  • Bachelor's degree in the Sciences or Engineering.
  • Deep understanding of genomic technologies including next-generation sequencing (NGS), PCR/qPCR, microarrays, and sample prep workflows.
  • In-depth knowledge of automated liquid handling platforms, thermal cyclers, sequencers, and related diagnostic equipment.
  • Familiarity with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements such as CLIA, CAP, FDA, ISO 15189, and GLP/GMP.
  • Expertise in assay validation, equipment qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ), and maintaining validation documentation in regulated environments.
  • Working knowledge of LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems), instrument integration, and data tracking/reporting tools.
  • Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop multidisciplinary technical teams in a fast-paced, high-throughput lab setting.
  • Strong analytical skills in diagnosing complex instrumentation or system issues and implementing effective corrective actions.
  • Skilled in leading cross-functional projects for technology implementation, process improvements, or system upgrades.
  • Application of Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies to drive efficiency, reduce variability, and enhance quality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to collaborate across departments, document procedures, and present technical findings to both scientific and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Skilled in managing external service providers, negotiating contracts, and overseeing instrument service agreements.
  • Ability to align technical service operations with long-term business goals and evolving scientific requirements.
  • Comfortable with managing change in a dynamic lab environment with shifting priorities, new technologies, and growth demands.
  • High level of accuracy and thoroughness in documentation, validation activities, and compliance-related tasks.
