About The Position

This Senior Manager of Horticulture and Grounds is responsible for assisting the Director with the daily operations of the Horticulture and Festival of Lights department. This position is directly involved with the budgeting, planning and implementation of all aspects of Festival of Lights to ensure the success and longevity of the show as it continues to evolve. The Senior Manager position requires a “hands-on” management style in order to promote exceptional care and maintenance to the grounds of Oglebay, and to the Festival of Lights show.

Requirements

  • Fourth year college or university program certificate; or five to seven years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to obtain WV Public Applicator Pesticide License, categories 4 and 6

Responsibilities

  • Develop and promote a safe and organized work environment that supports quality work and high productivity
  • Assists director with budget preparation and implementation and helps oversee capital projects
  • Oversee and manage all day-to-day operations of the Festival of Lights department
  • Develop plans for creation of new light displays and oversee completion with both in-house staff and external contractors
  • Requires basic knowledge of electrical concepts and fundamentals, and ability to wire light displays and train staff
  • Requires knowledge related to computer networking, programming (for light controllers), and the ability to be self-taught regarding various light show software to troubleshoot controller and display issues
  • Assists director with overseeing the WPC grounds management operations
  • Assists in monitoring plant health of seasonal plants, interiorscapes, turf grass, trees, and other plants
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and trains staff on irrigation systems
  • Applies pesticides as needed in accordance state law
  • Keeps track of and monitors the department’s equipment maintenance programs
  • Assist with researching and implementing new light show ideas
  • Interviews staff for hire, and follows through with disciplinary action measures in accordance with park policies
  • Creates schedules and requires adherence to daily and future planning schedules
  • Organizes set-up and tear down schedules, and assists with coordinating external contractors
  • Assists with implementing annual training programs
  • Ability to train staff so they are fully proficient according to their job description
  • Ability to operate equipment such as aerial lifts (up to 120 feet), telehandlers, skid steers, end-loaders/backhoe, and any other piece of equipment necessary to complete a task
  • Assists with and implements snow removal
  • Has a background in proper chainsaw usage and maintenance
  • Removes trees, trains and supervises staff operating chainsaws
  • Prunes trees in accordance with the ANSI A-300 tree care standards
  • Ability and knowledge to obtain ISA Arborist Certification if deemed necessary
  • Complete appropriate trainings listed on the human resources Training Matrix
  • Adhere to Wheeling Park Commission’s safety rules and policy; refer any and all safety concerns to department manager, safety committee, or human resources
  • Interact with the public with a cheerful and positive attitude, solve guest problems and complaints in a proper manner, and maintain harmonious working relationships with fellow employees
