About The Position

The ASPCA believes that when the most humane farmers thrive, farm animals benefit. But for that to happen, the voices and faces of independent livestock farmers need to be brought to the forefront of policymaking. As the Senior Manager, Farmer Advocacy, help the nation’s oldest and most respected animal welfare organization - supported by millions of constituents - build a food system that benefits independent farmers who respect their animals, their communities and the environment. The Senior Manager of Farmer Advocacy will be responsible for further developing the ASPCA’s engagement with farmers and ranchers to promote policies and markets that support pasture-based farming. Specifically, alongside a partner organization and a committee of farmer leaders, this individual will co-lead and grow a new farmer network devoted to building community and developing advocacy skills among independent, pasture-based farmers to push for policies that support more humane agriculture and reduce the market dominance of industrial animal agriculture.

Requirements

  • Strong relationship skills - ability to develop and maintain connections, including with people who may hold diverse views.
  • Track record of organizing complex projects on a deadline.
  • Ambition to build a more humane food system, and a strong belief in the role of policy and farmers’ voices to do so.
  • Strong communicator – track record of using social media, written content, storytelling and/or campaign tactics to persuade audiences.
  • Comfort learning new databases and tools (e.g., Airtable, Canva).
  • Comfort with public speaking.
  • Candidates must provide a valid driver’s license upon hire and pass a motor vehicle history check demonstrating a safe driving history.
  • Candidate must also be able to rent a motor vehicle for use when traveling.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience presenting information in a formal setting (e.g. virtual or in-person trainings, conferences, workshops, etc.) highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute recruitment, engagement and communication plans to achieve network growth and advocacy goals.
  • Develop trainings, workshops and advocacy opportunities to help farmers tell their stories to the media, lawmakers and the public.
  • Set up surveys, check-ins, farm visits and community events to ensure that farmer leaders, members and potential members feel supported, empowered, engaged and understood in their challenges.
  • Represent the network with media, farmer audiences, other non-profits in this space and lawmakers.
  • Plan and execute regular events, especially legislator farm tours, but also virtual and in-person farmer listening sessions, policy briefings, advocacy trainings, conference events and fly-ins.
  • Coordinate all event logistics including scheduling, travel, lodging, venues, food and materials.
  • Develop and manage short and long-term work plans, deliverables, timelines, calendars, contact lists and tracking systems for the network.
  • Develop tools and systems that facilitate communication amongst leaders, members and from the network to its members.
  • Provide regular updates and strategic recommendations to network partners.
