About The Position

As a Sr. Manager Data Science on the LMD Strategy & Science team, you will serve as a technical leader shaping the algorithmic and scientific direction of Walmart’s Last Mile Delivery ecosystem. You will define and architect advanced optimization, simulation, machine learning, and GenAI solutions that operate at national scale and materially impact customer experience, driver performance, and cost efficiency. This role is a senior individual contributor position with enterprise-level influence, responsible for setting technical direction, solving the organization’s most complex problems, and elevating data science standards across the platform.

Requirements

  • 8–12+ years of experience in data science, applied machine learning, optimization, or operations research, with demonstrated impact at scale.
  • Deep expertise in mathematical optimization (e.g., LP/MIP, heuristics, network optimization), simulation, advanced ML, and experimentation design.
  • Experience designing and deploying large-scale production systems in cloud environments (e.g., GCP).
  • Demonstrated experience applying GenAI / LLMs in operational or decision-support contexts.
  • Proven ability to influence technical direction across teams without direct reporting authority.
  • Strong executive communication skills with the ability to connect scientific strategy to measurable business outcomes.
  • Bachelors degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 5 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • Masters degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 3 years' experience in an analytics related field.
  • 7 years' experience in an analytics or related field.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD or Master’s degree in Operations Research, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a closely related quantitative field.
  • Experience in logistics, transportation, supply chain optimization, or marketplace platforms.
  • Experience leading platform-level architectural design for data science systems.
  • Publications, patents, or recognized expertise in optimization or applied AI (preferred but not required).

Responsibilities

  • Define the long-term scientific and algorithmic strategy for core LMD systems, including routing, dispatch, capacity planning, network design, and cost optimization.
  • Architect scalable optimization, ML, and simulation frameworks that power decision-making across the LMD ecosystem.
  • Identify and prioritize high-leverage opportunities where advanced analytics and AI can create step-change improvements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in optimization, applied ML, and GenAI, influencing cross-team technical decisions.
  • Design and deploy large-scale mathematical optimization, simulation, reinforcement learning, and ML systems.
  • Lead the development of GenAI / LLM-powered agents and decision-support systems for complex operational workflows.
  • Establish experimentation and evaluation frameworks to rigorously measure algorithmic impact.
  • Ensure solutions are robust, scalable, production-ready, and aligned with platform architecture.
  • Partner with engineering, product, operations, and business leadership to align technical solutions with strategic objectives.
  • Translate ambiguous, high-complexity business challenges into structured scientific approaches.
  • Present technical strategy and performance results to senior leadership with clarity and business relevance.
  • Raise the technical bar across the organization by defining modeling standards, best practices, and reusable frameworks.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to senior and junior data scientists.
  • Drive knowledge sharing and thought leadership in optimization and AI within LMD Strategy & Science.
