About The Position

NBC News Digital is looking for a Sr. Manager of Data Engineering to support the continued evolution of our digital platforms and data infrastructure. As a core member of the data engineering team, you will play a critical role in building and scaling the data systems that power NBC News' digital transformation. Working alongside our engineers, you will manage and mentor a team of talented engineers while ensuring the successful design, deployment, and maintenance of data pipelines and applications that drive business insights across NBC News Digital. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead a team that shapes how data is integrated into the development of NBC News products, working in close collaboration with cross-functional teams including data scientists, DevOps, and business stakeholders. This position reports to the Sr. Director of Data Science and Engineering.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in data engineering or a related technical field.
• At least 2+ years in a management or team leadership role.
• Strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and other data engineering technologies.
• Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred), big data tools (e.g., Spark, Hadoop), and distributed systems.
• Experience building and maintaining end-to-end data pipelines and data infrastructure.
• Familiarity with ETL frameworks, data warehousing, and data lakes.
• Ability to work cross-functionally with product teams, data scientists, DevOps, and business leaders.
• Experience with Agile development methodologies, including sprint planning and project tracking.
• Familiarity with data governance principles and best practices.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with building scalable, real-time data streaming pipelines using tools like Apache Kafka.
• Experience with Apache Airflow for workflow orchestration and DAG management.
• Experience with AWS infrastructure tools (e.g., Lambda, S3, Redshift) and serverless technologies.
• Experience working within a media, publishing, or news organization.

Responsibilities

• Lead a team of data engineers to deliver high-quality, scalable data systems.
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and career development opportunities for junior and mid-level engineers.
• Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning within the team.
• Oversee the execution of data engineering projects, ensuring they align with both business needs and technical standards.
• Manage timelines, resources, and deliverables, working closely with stakeholders to prioritize tasks and remove roadblocks.
• Assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of data pipelines that integrate data from various sources.
• Work closely with data scientists, machine learning engineers, and product teams to ensure the seamless integration of data solutions.
• Continuously evaluate and improve the development, testing, and deployment processes.
• Collaborate with the Principal Data Engineer to develop long-term strategies for data architecture and infrastructure.
• Act as the bridge between the data engineering team and business stakeholders.
• Stay up to date with emerging technologies and trends in data engineering.
