About The Position

The Senior Manager, Capital Projects is responsible for the management of design, engineering, legal, construction, and other professionals engaged in the planning, design, and construction of large and small capital projects for the University.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent technical training, knowledge, and experience in design and construction.
  • Requires at least seven (7) years of stable and progressively responsible experience in design, construction, and project management-related duties.
  • Experience managing large and diverse project teams that include supervision of commercial/institutional building renovation and/or new construction projects.
  • Experience in capital budget preparation and administration.
  • Experience must include management of all phases on sample major projects from initiation of programming and design through completion of construction, commissioning, and occupancy.
  • Familiarity with coordinating multiple interest groups and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work within complex phasing constraints and within existing, densely built, mature facilities environments.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the planning, design, and construction of assigned projects with other University entities and various University clients.
  • Meet with clients to determine capital project requirements; document project priorities; assist clients in determining project funding requirements and sources; project location and schedule; complete paperwork to advance the project.
  • Work with the Director to develop capital approval submissions for presentation to University leadership.
  • Manage and coordinate the activities of the Project Committee for each project.
  • Assure adherence to departmental processes and procedures through the approval process.
  • Assist management in improving and developing departmental guidelines and procedures for project management.
  • Mentor, train, and assist less experienced project management staff.
  • Establish skill and/or experience requirements and selection criteria for project consultants and contractors.
  • Manage the process to determine the best-qualified companies.
  • Document the scope of work, budget, and schedule requirements, and solicit proposals from designers and contractors.
  • Assist with the review of contracts to ensure that the University will receive the required services for the agreed-upon terms while maintaining protection from sources of liability.
  • Review designer proposals and ensure they produce quality design documents that meet contract deliverables.
  • Monitor construction quality to verify that the intent of the construction documents is carried out.
  • Ensure contractors plan, implement, and maintain a safe work site.
  • Develop backup plans to keep projects moving forward when obstacles occur.
  • Manage assigned capital projects to assure successful execution within established budgets and schedules.
  • Coordinate project progress meetings, issue monthly status and financial reports, and update progress schedules.
  • Manage and initiate financial transactions for assigned projects.
  • Responsible for the verification of work performed and the recommendation for approval and timely payment of the amounts invoiced.
  • Control project costs and confirm compliance with University procurement requirements.
