About The Position

As an Automation Engineer focused on Systems Availability, you will play a critical role in ensuring that Walmart’s in-store automation systems remain operational, reliable, and resilient at scale. Your work will directly impact store productivity and customer fulfillment by reducing downtime, eliminating recurring failures, and strengthening the long-term stability of automation deployed across the store network. You will serve as a technical problem-solver and reliability owner, partnering closely with store-level maintenance technicians, remote monitoring teams, engineering, product, and vendors. Your primary responsibility is to analyze recurring automation incidents, identify systemic gaps, and implement durable process, design, or monitoring improvements that prevent repeat failures across multiple sites. This role is focused on operational reliability and continuous improvement, not day-to-day break/fix support.

Requirements

  • 3–5+ years of experience in automation, industrial systems, reliability engineering, or operational engineering roles.
  • Demonstrated experience improving system uptime, availability, or reliability in complex, distributed environments.
  • Strong root cause analysis skills, with the ability to move beyond symptoms to address underlying systemic issues.
  • Experience working across hardware, software, and operational domains, and effectively partnering with field teams and remote support organizations.
  • Ability to translate technical findings into clear, actionable process or design improvements.
  • Data-driven mindset with experience using operational metrics to guide prioritization and decision-making.
  • Strong cross-functional communication skills and the ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Willingness to travel up to ~50% to support field investigations, store visits, and cross-functional problem-solving as needed (including occasional nights or weekends).
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field and 4 years’ experience in Engineering, supply chain, or a related area.
  • 6 years’ experience in Engineering, supply chain, or a related area.
  • 2 years’ supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own and improve Systems Availability (uptime) for assigned automation platforms across multiple store locations.
  • Analyze automation downtime events and recurring incidents to identify systemic hardware, software, process, or operational contributors.
  • Partner with remote monitoring teams to validate root cause assessments and distinguish between hardware, software, and process-driven failures.
  • Work closely with store-level maintenance technicians to understand field conditions, common failure modes, and repair effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement long-term corrective actions that eliminate repeat issues, including: Process changes Design or configuration recommendations Preventive maintenance improvements Monitoring, alerting, or diagnostic enhancements
  • Lead cross-functional problem-solving efforts with Engineering, Product, Operations Support, and vendors to resolve multi-site reliability issues.
  • Define, document, and standardize reliability processes, escalation paths, and recovery mechanisms to ensure consistent execution across stores.
  • Use data analysis and system performance metrics to identify trends, prioritize issues, and measure the effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Support new automation deployments by providing reliability input, failure mode insights, and readiness criteria based on operational learnings.
