Fairfax County Government is seeking a skilled and motivated Senior Maintenance Supervisor to join the Department of Wastewater Management, part of an essential team dedicated to protecting water quality and ensuring the safe, reliable operation of critical utility infrastructure. As part of the Heavy Maintenance & Repair section, you will lead a crew of 4 to 10 employees in daily maintenance and construction activities related to the wastewater collection system, including inspection, cleaning, repair, and installation. This role combines hands-on leadership with technical oversight and administrative duties to support the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes, skid steers, and dump trucks. Wastewater Management positions are responsible for providing uninterrupted sewer service to residents during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies. This position is designated as emergency service and is subject to 24-hour on-call and may be required to report to work during extreme inclement weather or other emergencies, including after-hours and weekend work during emergency incidents to fulfill emergency service duties. Overtime may be mandated when emergencies occurred related to the health, welfare, or safety of either the public or employees. Requirements

• Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: high school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education, and four years of increasingly responsible experience related to the maintenance of municipal facilities and infrastructure from either a public or private organization.
• Valid driver's license.
• Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "A".
• DOT Medical Card.
• VDOT Work Zone Safety Traffic Control Intermediate Certification within 12 months of hire.
• The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, driving record check, and commercial driver's license screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

Nice To Haves

• At least two years of experience in the following:
• Supervising field crews or serving as a team lead within a utility, sewer, or construction maintenance operation.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, assign, and oversee day-to-day maintenance activities, including preventative work, repairs, and emergency response.
• Practical experience operating or supervising the use of equipment such as excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, skid steers, and related construction/utility tools.
• Familiarity with OSHA safety practices, confined space entry requirements, and traffic control standards; commitment to maintaining a safety-first work environment.
• Proficiency with digital tools such as Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, GIS platforms, and enterprise work order/asset management systems for scheduling, documentation, and resource tracking.
• VDOT Work Zone Traffic Control/Flagger certification.
• MACP/PACP certifications.
• Confined Space Entry certification.

Responsibilities

• Lead and Support Field Teams: Supervise, schedule, and coordinate daily work of field crews performing maintenance and repairs on the sanitary sewer system.
• Ensure Operational Excellence: Oversee preventive and corrective maintenance activities using GIS-integrated asset management systems.
• Promote the Culture of Safety: Actively engage in safety programs, ensure crew compliance with safety procedures.
• Provide Coaching and Development: Mentor, train, and support staff to encourage growth and continuous performance improvement. Conduct evaluations, manage performance, and take disciplinary action when necessary in accordance with departmental policies.
• Communicate Effectively: Maintain open, professional communication with staff, management, vendors, contractors, and the public.
• Make Informed Decisions: Apply strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment to address operational challenges. Respond to after-hours calls and support overtime needs when required.
• Maintain Records and Reports: Approve timesheets, track resource usage, and prepare reports related to maintenance activities, employee performance, and safety incidents.
• Support Resource Planning: Allocate staff and equipment efficiently based on operational demands. Communicate with vendors to obtain quotes and order necessary materials and supplies.
• Adapt and Resolve Conflicts: Adjust to changing field conditions and shifting priorities. Proactively address and resolve operational or personnel conflicts in a constructive and timely manner.
• Field Engagement and Oversight: Regularly inspect work sites, participate in field activities when needed.
