About The Position

Performs a variety of the more complex maintenance and repair tasks involved in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, traffic signal, masonry, plastering, carpentry, painting, sheet metal, mechanical, or other types of maintenance work; does related work as required.

Requirements

  • Experience: One (1) year of experience in maintenance work involving a variety of tasks.
  • Knowledge of: Standard tools, materials, methods, and practices and of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in performing general maintenance and repair work.
  • Ability to: Understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions; take precautions in performing the work; obtain, store, safeguard, distribute, and properly use equipment, materials, and supplies; maintain essential records and files; learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units; read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
  • License: Appointees may be required to possess a CDL Class B driver's license valid in New Jersey.

Responsibilities

  • Replaces light bulbs, fuses, wall plates, fixture cords, and switches; troubleshoots malfunctions with the use of a test light or other simple testing equipment; replaces or installs boxes and conduit.
  • Repairs plumbing stoppages and leaks in copper, iron, and other pipe.
  • Repairs damaged plastered walls and ceilings. Spackles, repairs, and installs locks and fixtures. Repairs and constructs simple wooden structures.
  • Removes and/or repairs portions of boardwalk; reconstructs portions of boardwalk for projects approved as part of the Capital Plan including test areas of plastics, CCA Southern yellow pine, and hardwood; completes areas of partial reconstruction.
  • May layout boardwalk substructure and deck components.
  • Erects simple forms, mixes and pours cement and aggregates; does the finishing work involved in concrete structures; patches and repairs concrete structures.
  • Assists with traffic signal maintenance and repair.
  • Assists with HVAC maintenance and repair.
  • Paints interior and exterior metal, wood, and masonry surfaces. Replaces washers and gaskets, and makes general service repairs. Does general sheet metal work involved in repairing roofs, drain boards, and rainspouts. Replaces broken glass and reputties. Changes lubricants, refuels, and does light maintenance work on equipment and vehicles. Cleans tools and equipment. May work from instructions or work orders.
  • Inspects completed work and may take the lead over a small maintenance unit. Keeps essential records and files. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • May remove snow from streets with the use of a pickup truck; may shovel snow from sidewalks; may salt and sand sidewalks; may pick up debris after a storm.
