About The Position

The Senior Mainframe Engineer role is accountable for research, evaluation, design, implementation, and system maintenance and product solutions. Provides technical direction and engineering support for projects and infrastructure. Develops and maintains functional knowledge of evolving IT engineering industry technologies, concepts, trends, issues, and best practices related to the IBM mainframe environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • 10 years of experience in IBM mainframe and related technologies.
  • Advanced understanding of IBM mainframe peripheral architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with mainframe operations.
  • Significant experience leading, guiding, and coaching IT staff.
  • Advanced organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Expert research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills.
  • DEVOPs/SRE experience using Ansible/AAP, Python, and other automation tooling.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with z/OS, GDPS/PPRC, DASD Management, Batch Scheduling, Tape Management, Virtual Tape Environments, VTAM, UNIX System Services, HCD, WLM, SMP/E, USS, z/Architecture Assembler, COBOL, SAS/MXG, REXX, CICS.
  • Knowledge of DB2, MQ, HP NonStop, Modern IDEs, and newer languages (Python, Java, Go).
  • Experience with ServiceNow and Azure ADO.
  • Knowledge of Navy Federal products, services, programs, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Research, evaluate, design, implement, and maintain system solutions.
  • Provide technical direction and engineering support for projects and infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of evolving IT engineering technologies and best practices related to IBM mainframe.
  • Collaborate with high-level IT professionals, business strategists, and vendors.
  • Solve complex problems impacting strategic IT priorities and business results.
  • Create improved IT materials, tools, work aids, and processes related to System Administration.
  • Coach less experienced system programmers.
  • Install, maintain, and administer z/OS operating system releases and IBM mainframe software.
  • Troubleshoot IBM mainframe hardware and software issues.
  • Ensure security and integrity of system solutions in compliance with Navy Federal and industry standards.
  • Perform engineering research, procurement, deployment, and configuration for new systems.
  • Document standards and procedures for new and modified system components.
  • Mentor others in technologies, process changes, tools, and standards.
  • Provide input and make budgetary recommendations regarding staffing and equipment.
  • Lead project scope definition, plans, and deliverables.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
