About The Position

The Senior Machinist operates and uses a variety of machine shop tools at an experienced journey level to assist in the fabrication of repair parts for equipment. Requirements

  • Three (3) years of experience as a manual machinist performing general production or maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the operation of machine shop tools such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, grinder, drill press, and other power and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.
  • Knowledge of welding fabrication, cutting, and grinding.
  • Ability to work and complete assignments in a machine shop setting.
  • Ability to read blueprints and design drawings.
  • Ability to complete routine paperwork.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Valid driver's license with good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of a machinist training program from a Vocational or Trade School plus two (2) years of the stated experience will meet the education and experience requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Operates a variety of machine tools such as lathe, milling machine, shaper, band saw, and other fabrication tools to produce repair parts for equipment; understands and applies protocols and procedures for repairing machines.
  • Identifies and determines the best method for making a part, sets-up machines for the job including designing and making tools and jigs, and selects the proper stock material to ensure a quality product; orders tools and supplies to ensure proper materials are available for use.
  • Performs calculations and uses precision measuring instruments; applies micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and other instruments to ensure parts are machined to proper tolerances.
  • Reads blueprints, drawings, design patterns, and sketches to identify parameters, best fabrication method, and tools required to make specific parts; performs welds and ensures the appropriate tools are calibrated and available for use.
  • Communicates with supervisors, other city departments, vendors, and parts personnel to obtain job information and provides instructions and training to apprentice-level machinists to ensure understanding.
  • Completes paperwork such as daily time record of jobs performed, materials used, and dimensions of parts to ensure accurate documentation.
  • Operates crane and forklift to move equipment around in shop and occasionally operates backhoe when making repairs in field.
  • Performs any and all other trades work as needed or assigned.
