About The Position

The FAA’s National Airspace System (NAS) Enterprise Services Group (AJW-17) provides second-level engineering and 24/7 operational support for enterprise systems critical to national aviation safety. AJW-17 ensures NAS systems operate securely, reliably, and in compliance with cybersecurity, configuration control, and enterprise architecture standards supporting infrastructure modernization and mission assurance objectives. The Linux/Unix System Administrator supports this mission by deploying, securing, and sustaining enterprise Linux/Unix environments that underpin critical NAS services.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 20 years’ experience with Bachelor’s Degree in engineering (systems, civil, electrical, electronic, chemical, industrial, mechanical, aeronautical, avionics, environmental, or computer), or Master's Degree in related field may be substituted for Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years’ experience, or PhD in related field may be substituted for Bachelor’s Degree and 7 years’ experience.
  • Hands-on experience administering Linux/Unix operating systems in enterprise environments.
  • Experience with virtualization platforms (VMware or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of system hardening, STIG/CIS compliance, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Proficiency in patch management, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of IP networking, DNS, and secure protocols (SSH, TLS).
  • Experience with shell scripting (Bash) and/or Python.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills.
  • U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident Required (3+ years U.S. residency)
  • Ability to obtain FAA Suitability.

Nice To Haves

  • RHCSA, RHCE, Security+, CISSP, or similar certifications.
  • Experience in federal, regulated, or mission-critical environments.
  • Familiarity with automation and configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring/logging tools and SELinux management.
  • Knowledge of cross-domain or multi-network architectures.
  • FAA Experience and suitability.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, and maintain Linux/Unix systems (e.g., RHEL) in physical and virtualized environments (VMware or similar).
  • Provide second-level operational support, troubleshooting system failures, performance issues, and service outages in a 24/7 environment.
  • Implement system hardening and security controls in accordance with CIS Benchmarks, STIGs, and FAA cybersecurity requirements.
  • Perform patch management, vulnerability remediation, and compliance validation to maintain secure system baselines.
  • Administer core services such as DNS, SSH, web servers (Apache/Nginx), file transfer services, and MySQL/PostgreSQL databases.
  • Support identity and access management, secure data transfers, and multi-network environments.
  • Automate administrative tasks using Bash, Python, or configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible).
  • Monitor system performance, analyze logs, and coordinate with network and cybersecurity teams to resolve complex technical issues.
  • Maintain technical documentation, configuration records, and architecture diagrams.
