About The Position

The Senior Library Technician (Circulation/Reserves) at the College of Alameda is responsible for performing a variety of paraprofessional technical and clerical functions in library operations, particularly in circulation and reserves. This role requires independent judgment in applying established procedures and involves supervising student workers, managing library materials, and assisting patrons with library services. The position is integral to maintaining the library's operational efficiency and supporting the educational needs of the community.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of technical library experience or an equivalent combination of training, education, and qualifying experience.
  • Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse backgrounds of community college students.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, MS Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Knowledge of the Library of Congress cataloging and filing systems.
  • Experience with computerized online library catalogs and library automation software.
  • Library Technician's Certificate or Degree.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain financial and statistical records.

Responsibilities

  • Provide circulation and reserves services to patrons using the library's automated information systems.
  • Collect and maintain accurate records of overdue/late fines and payments.
  • Interview and recommend student workers for hire in circulations; train and supervise student workers in routine duties.
  • Perform copy and fast-add cataloging for library materials under librarian direction.
  • Process library materials for checkout, including adding covers, spine labels, barcoding, and tattle tape.
  • Assist librarians in cataloging materials for the general collections using OCLC and other databases.
  • Operate a variety of office equipment and PCs.
  • Assist librarians in preparing materials for exhibits and displays.
  • Maintain collection of course reserve materials; coordinate with instructors to identify needed materials.
  • Update quarterly Fair Use agreements with instructors to ensure copyright compliance.
  • Maintain Zero Text Cost resources through digitization of selected reserves.
  • Perform routine clerical tasks such as opening and distributing mail, photocopying, and compiling statistics.
  • Prepare purchase orders for library materials; verify and correct discrepancies.
  • Correspond with vendors regarding claims, credits, and incomplete shipments.
  • Access new material and maintain organized records of all new acquisitions.
  • Sort, shelve, and inventory materials, including periodic shelf reading.
