The Thousand Oaks Library is hiring for two key positions that support exceptional public service, community engagement, and daily library operations. We are seeking a dynamic, collaborative, and customer service-focused Senior Library Assistant to work closely with staff across all divisions and with volunteers to oversee Library Aides and Pages at the Thousand Oaks Library, and coordinate programs such as outreach, storytime, and more. At the same time, the City is recruiting for a Library Assistant in the Circulation Division at the Newbury Park Library, a role that performs a wide range of duties in support of the operations, services, and programs of both the Thousand Oaks Library and the Newbury Park Library. Requirements

  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate and interact positively with a diverse population.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with team members and different stakeholders.
  • Experience working with volunteers, including scheduling and training.
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized or college level course work in library science.
  • Possesses basic computer literacy including familiarity with e-mail (Outlook). Ability to learn and perform the basic functions of Microsoft and library-related applications. (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Executime, Sierra, Ask-A-Librarian, LibCal)
  • Two years of responsible clerical and routine technical experience in a library or related setting, comparable to a Library Aide with the City of Thousand Oaks.
  • Four years of responsible paraprofessional and technical experience in a library or related setting, including two years of experience comparable to a Library Assistant with the City of Thousand Oaks.
  • The position requires working night and weekend shifts at both the Thousand Oaks and the Newbury Park Libraries.
  • The ability to lift, drag, push, and pull files, tables, chairs, podiums, book carts, and materials weighing in excess of 25 pounds, up to 75 pounds is required, as is the ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Perform circulation activities such as checking in/out materials, registering patrons, explaining and upholding library policies/procedures, resolving minor collection issues, provide basic reference services, directional assistance, customer service (in person, over the telephone, and online via e-mail or text), and shelving returned materials as needed.
  • Lead supervisory duties for Circulation Library Pages - participates in hiring and selecting staff for Circulation; trains Library Pages on library policies and procedures; supervises Library Page staff including developing work schedules, reviewing and approving timesheets, and overseeing work activities.
  • Act as the point of contact for Community Gallery reservations, processing reservation requests, assisting Gallery renters as needed, and coordinating with the Facilities Department to resolve maintenance issues when necessary.
  • Set up and take down meeting room equipment in support of library and other events; train new staff on set up and take down procedures with furniture and related rental equipment.
  • Assist with general operation of technology and media equipment; respond to and troubleshoot equipment support requests.
  • Assist with documentation for performance reviews and performance issues.
  • Assist with additional projects, duties, or tasks as assigned.
  • Lead supervisory duties for Public Services Library Aides and Pages - participates in hiring and selecting staff (and volunteers) for Public Services; trains Library Pages, volunteers and other personnel on library policies and procedures; assists in supervising assigned staff including developing work schedules and overseeing activities.
  • Coordinates daily activities of staff and volunteers.
  • Prepares and presents children's programs, storytimes, and other Public Services programs; member of Summer Reading Club committee and participates in Youth Services and Public Services team projects.
  • Provides and conducts school tours and outreach visits in and outside the Library.
  • Prepares materials for use in publicizing and presenting library services and programs, including handouts, crafts, and audiovisuals.
  • Provides information services, including general reference assistance as assigned.
  • Participates in collection development and management activities including the selection of books and materials as assigned.
