About The Position

The Senior Legal Counsel will directly deliver and/or coordinate legal support that is high value, high risk and complex in nature. This role will apply a broad knowledge of applicable and emerging laws in the United States and advise a diverse group of stakeholders on a wide range of privacy issues. This role requires the ability to provide both strategic legal advice as well as leadership on the implementation of business and legal strategies and organizational transformation.

Requirements

  • Must have legal authorization to work in the USA on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
  • A Law degree is required and IAPP CIPP certification is preferred.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in the legal field.
  • Working knowledge of data privacy laws and regulations globally with significant experience in the US.
  • Extensive experience drafting privacy policies, procedures, templates, and toolkits.
  • Experience leading and supporting litigation and investigation response efforts.
  • Proven ability to manage potential exposure to legal sanctions and risk exposure concerning privacy.
  • Broad knowledge of IT terminology, processes, systems, and applications.
  • Senior level legal expertise in drafting, negotiating complex agreements relating to personal data.
  • Demonstrated experience and mindset for change management and business transformation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional, timely, cost effective and practical legal advice and support to IDT and across the enterprise.
  • Liaise with senior internal and external stakeholders regarding US-related data privacy issues and how those issues relate to wider global privacy matters.
  • Interface with the Data Protection Officer within the Shell Ethics and Compliance Office (SECO).
  • Lead data privacy incidents including assessing the nature and severity of incidents, making reports to regulators and engaging with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation under legal privilege where required.
  • Provide pragmatic and creative solutions to complex and high risk, high value challenges.
  • Maintain an effective external network to benchmark privacy issues with other businesses and industries.
  • Coach and mentor more junior team members.
  • Understand and balance business objectives with legal requirements.
  • Develop and implement key strategic initiatives to maximize the use of legal resources and create best practices and guidance and training modules for stakeholders.
