About The Position

The Senior Lead Wastewater Operator is a senior technical leadership role designed for an experienced Lead Operator who is ready for greater autonomy, broader responsibility, and expanded operational influence. This role serves as the primary on-site authority for complex wastewater treatment operations and supports multiple facilities as needed. The Senior Lead Wastewater Operator is trusted to independently manage process control decisions, mentor operators, interface with regulators and clients, and proactively identify operational risks and improvement opportunities. This role maintains a strong hands-on component while expanding leadership scope beyond a single facility.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel between assigned facilities
  • Valid New York State wastewater operator license appropriate for assigned facilities (Grade 3A or higher preferred)
  • Minimum of 6–8 years of progressive wastewater treatment operations experience
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a Lead Operator or equivalent senior operations role
  • Strong working knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, laboratory testing, safety practices, and SPDES compliance
  • Experience interacting with regulatory agencies and inspectors
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Familiar with LogCheck or similar electronic work order and reporting systems
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply permits, SOPs, safety plans, and technical documentation

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the senior on-site operational lead for assigned wastewater treatment facilities
  • Independently oversee daily operations, process control, and system performance
  • Make process control decisions to ensure SPDES permit compliance and effluent quality
  • Act as the escalation point for Operators and Lead Operators prior to management involvement
  • Lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex treatment, equipment, and process issues
  • Review historical and real-time plant data, laboratory results, and operational trends to proactively identify risks and optimization opportunities
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and on-the-job training to Operators, Operators-in-Training, and Lead Operators
  • Support onboarding and development of operations staff
  • Reinforce operational standards, accountability, and best practices
  • Provide input to management on staff performance, training needs, and operational readiness
