About The Position

Vault 44.01 (“Vault”) is a leading carbon capture & storage (“CCS”) developer focused on the development, capitalization, and operation of carbon storage assets throughout North America. Vault’s team brings over 90 years of direct carbon storage experience, with involvement in the development of carbon storage projects across North America since 2007. Vault’s capabilities span technical analysis, project design, permitting, stakeholder engagement, land leasing and acquisition, facility construction, and operations. In collaboration with our industrial partners, we are currently developing CCS projects in the US Midwest, US Southeast, and Canada, focusing on single CO2 source, near-site sequestration projects and including 7 projects currently under contract. Vault has secured a US$300 million equity capital commitment from Grey Rock Investment Partners (Dallas, TX-based private equity company) and has offices in Denver, CO and Calgary, AB. Vault is seeking a Senior Landman with exceptional collaboration capabilities and a strong builder’s mindset. Reporting to the VP, Land and Stakeholder Engagement, the Senior Landman will execute functions related to surface and subsurface leasing, oversight of title and abstracting functions, and right-of-way acquisition. The individual will work to acquire and maintain pore space and right-of-way for carbon sequestration projects across North America through “boots on the ground” landowner engagement, involvement in community relations, and presentation of industry-specific educational data. A proven ability from sourcing to closing is required to be successful in this role. This role will interact with various functions within Vault 44.01, including Subsurface, Business Development, Finance, and Project Management. This position requires an exceptional, highly motivated person willing to commit to face-to-face, high-touch landowner interactions and to work cross-departmentally to acquire pore space and right-of-way within project parameters. Critical to the role’s success, the Senior Landman will be expected to interact with individual landowners, local and state officials, and industrial partners to inform on the technical parameters of carbon capture and sequestration and ultimately acquire pore space and right of way. The Senior Landman must possess both a strategic mindset and the desire to tactically acquire pore space and right of way through landowner engagement, drafting and editing of lease documents, and oversight and management of brokers and attorneys for title diligence. This job ensures alignment of land acquisitions with company goals. This position requires extensive travel.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 7+ years of relevant work experience (renewable energy, oil & gas – upstream or midstream – and/ or carbon storage development)
  • Highly proficient working knowledge of MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Adobe
  • Candidate must be a motivated self-tarter with the ability to work independently and reach closure within established time frames.
  • Strong attention to detail; Take pride in presenting a high-quality work product; Strong self-organization and time management skills; Ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders, elected officials, bureaucrats, regulators and other external stakeholders
  • An adaptable, candid, open person with a history of “walking the talk” on values and the desire to engage landowners and community leaders face-to-face
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet required deadlines, and manage multiple projects at various stages of development
  • Experience with mapping and land administration software (ArcGIS, LandVantage, Etc.)
  • Legal resident of the United States of America

Responsibilities

  • Deliver exceptional and effective Land services in a collaborative, customer-focused manner, balancing cost-effectiveness with the strategic direction of the organization
  • Organize and manage all aspects related to land acquisition and stakeholder engagement, including prospecting, negotiating, and managing due diligence to secure pore space to meet project requirements across North America
  • Manage the land aspect of project development from landowner identification through pore space acquisition and administration to ensure the processes are in place to meet pore space requirements determined by Vault’s Technical Team
  • Work closely with all technical groups to manage the land acquisition process, including leasing, drafting of agreements, title diligence, and land administration
  • Engage landowners face-to-face and, when applicable, oversee land-related vendors, such as appraisals, brokers, survey, and title companies, as needed to ensure goals and targets are being met consistently and within the required parameters
  • Advise and assist with site selection, site acquisition, leasing space, and other functions relating to land acquisition, negotiation, and sale
  • Meet with key landowners and stakeholders to acquire pore space and right-of-way and foster good landowner relations
  • Support project development teams at public open houses and landowner meetings
  • Coordinate with project, legal, environmental, and engineering teams as applicable
  • Assist with efforts to obtain federal and state approvals
  • Review, track, and coordinate execution of all documents necessary to secure property rights
  • Negotiate and settle damage claims associated with new or existing operations
  • Lead due diligence efforts and risk assessment activities
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
