About The Position

Under direction, the Senior Surveying Technician acts as Party Chief; conducts topographical, boundary, location and construction surveys using various survey instruments; records readings compile notes, makes sketches, and enters data into computer.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course studies in Surveying or Civil Engineering or related field, and three (3) years’ work experience in land surveying under the supervision of a Professional Surveyor; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must possess a valid state of residency driver’s license.
  • Must remain insurable under the County’s vehicle insurance policy.
  • Knowledge of: County and departmental goals and objectives; County and departmental policies and procedures; English grammar and spelling; surveying techniques Drafting techniques Topography, GIS concepts Supervisory principles and practices Office practices and procedures
  • Skill in: Typing, data entry, word processing, and computer operation Computer programs Adding machine or calculator operation Use of modern office equipment Motor vehicle operation UAV operation, surveying instruments and materials utilization
  • Ability to: Interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, picture, or schedule form Deal with variety of variables with somewhat unfamiliar context Read, copy, and record figures accurately Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers; calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages; apply concepts of algebra and geometry Apply concepts of calculus and trigonometry Prepare accurate documentation Copy records precisely without error Copy material accurately and recognize grammatical and spelling errors Complete routine forms Compile and prepare reports Use proper research methods to gather data Develop complex reports and position papers Proofread technical materials, recognize errors, and make corrections Maintain records according to established procedures Communicate effectively Understand technical manuals and/or verbal instructions Understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; gather, collate, and classify information Answer routine telephone inquiries Respond to routine inquiries from public and/or officials Develop and maintain effective working relationships Travel to and gain access to worksite.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as party chief in absence of professional surveyor
  • Supervises assigned crew and directs the various surveying functions
  • Assigns tasks, plans and schedules survey activities to achieve affective utilization of available manpower
  • Assists in the completion of timecards to be approved by the Supervisor
  • Conducts topographical, boundary, location and construction surveys using various survey instruments (e.g., total stations, data collectors, prism poles, GPS, leveling rods, UAV’s, etc.)
  • Records readings from instruments and gauges
  • Calculate distances, angles, elevation, grades, etc. using algebra, statistics, geometry and trigonometry
  • Maintains notes of measurements, monuments and calculations to prepare final survey plat
  • Drives stakes or rods into ground with sledge hammer to facilitate surveying
  • Sets final lines and monuments in field
  • Ensures equipment is clean and operating properly
  • Drives truck transporting crew and equipment
  • Ensures work area is safe
  • Meets with contractors to show them where field survey points are
  • Gathers information about area being surveyed from plats, plans recorded deeds, topographical maps, work instruction, etc.
  • Prepares and reviews survey plans
  • Prepares reports based on field survey data and existing records
  • Assists in the organization, data entry and file management of surveys, maps, plats, benchmarks and scanned images
  • Works with other departments in the utilization of such files
  • Answers questions from property owners or officials about work being performed
  • Assists surveyors, attorneys and general public in locating old surveys and records
  • Drafts plans and deeds related to surveying
  • Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed
  • Attends training and seminars, as directed
  • Meets all job safety requirements and applicable OSHA safey standards that pertain to essential functions
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance
  • Due to the nature of the job, when scheduled for on-call assignment, the Senior Surveying Technician must be available to return to work after normal work hours or on weekends and/or holidays when called to do so
