About The Position

OpenAI's Legal team plays an indispensable role in advancing OpenAI's mission by navigating futuristic, foundational legal issues in AI. This is the team for you if you care deeply about doing meaningful and novel work with a team of technology lawyers. The team is composed of various backgrounds, including technology, intellectual property, venture capital, M&A, litigation, regulatory, employment, and tax law. We're growing our world-class legal team and seek an experienced Senior Intellectual Property (IP) Paralegal to join our team and provide paralegal support and coordination across multiple IP functions. The role will assist with a variety of projects and processes, including those supporting patent development, trademarks, and open source compliance. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in patent law, exceptional organizational skills, and a proven ability to handle a high volume of administrative tasks. This role is highly cross-functional across OpenAI, including work across our Legal, Global Affairs, Research, Product and Executive teams. In addition, you will help develop/improve processes and programs to help our team operate efficiently. This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of combined experience at fast-paced technology companies and technology-focused law firms
  • Comprehensive knowledge of U.S. and international patent prosecution procedures
  • Experience with IP portfolio management software and the USPTO system
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively with team members, outside counsel, and business stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Bachelor's degree, Paralegal Certificate, or equivalent experience

Responsibilities

  • Organize and support OpenAI's IP portfolio, including administration of internal patent docket, patent maintenance fees, and budgets
  • Coordinate projects with in-house counsel, outside counsel, and internal clients, including coordination of disclosure meetings
  • Develop and continuously improve, scale, and maintain internal IP management resources, systems, tools, and processes
  • Assist with oversight and communication of IP policies and resources
  • Assist with projects related to patents, trademarks, and open source compliance
  • Provide administrative support and assistance with other special projects
