About The Position

American Commercial Bank & Trust is currently seeking an experienced Senior Internal Auditor to support a growing national bank with approximately $2B–$5B in assets operating in Northern Illinois. This role provides independent, objective assurance and advisory services designed to add value and improve operations. The Internal Auditor will evaluate the effectiveness of risk management, internal controls, governance, and regulatory compliance, and will work closely with management, the Audit Committee, and external regulators in a mid‑size bank environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of internal audit experience within a financial institution, with direct experience in a bank or credit institution with $2B–$5B in assets.
  • Strong working knowledge of bank regulatory requirements, internal controls, and risk management frameworks (e.g., COSO).
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with bank examiners and external auditors in a regulated environment.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate risk and controls in a growing, mid‑size organization.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting results to senior management.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional certification such as CIA, CPA, CISA, or CRCM.
  • Experience auditing operational, compliance, and enterprise risk areas in addition to financial audits.
  • Familiarity with core banking systems, third‑party risk management, and vendor oversight.
  • Experience supporting audit functions in a multi‑location or hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute risk‑based internal audits across financial, operational, compliance, and regulatory areas appropriate for a $2B–$5B asset financial institution.
  • Evaluate the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, policies, and procedures in accordance with regulatory expectations applicable to mid‑size banks.
  • Assess compliance with federal and state banking regulations (e.g., OCC, FDIC, Federal Reserve, consumer compliance).
  • Prepare clear, well‑documented audit reports detailing findings, root causes, risk ratings, and practical recommendations.
  • Monitor, validate, and report on management action plans and remediation efforts.
  • Serve as a primary liaison with external auditors and bank examiners, supporting safety and soundness, compliance, and internal control examinations.
  • Provide advisory support on new products, services, systems, and process changes, with an emphasis on scalable controls suitable for a mid‑size institution.
  • Participate in the annual risk assessment and audit plan development, considering growth, regulatory focus areas, and emerging risks.
  • Stay current on banking regulations, supervisory guidance, and industry best practices relevant to institutions in the $2B–$5B asset range.
  • Mentor or review work performed by junior audit staff or co‑sourced audit partners, as applicable.
