About The Position

Amazon Industrial Robotics is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and motivated Interdisciplinary Systems Engineer to join a dynamic team that provides leadership for concept development, architecture, and design of robotics systems and industrial equipment. This candidate should be motivated to adapt well-tried systems engineering principles into a new and emerging industry. The preferred candidate would have demonstrated experience in robotics, mechatronics, experience with machine safety and/or functional safety standards and possess excellent communication skills. This position reports directly to the System Architect.

Requirements

  • Experience analyzing dependencies, tradeoffs, and sensitivities across multi-disciplinary systems
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field
  • 7+ years of work experience
  • Experience with eliciting and clarifying business and end user needs, and connecting those needs to system concepts, requirements, and designs
  • Experience leading technical collaborations and creating alignment across diverse groups (e.g. hardware engineering, software engineering, controls, functional safety, program management)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with industrial robotics and automated material handling solutions
  • Experience with machine learning systems
  • Experience developing and supporting hardware/software systems across the product life cycle
  • Experience with scalable production systems
  • Experience with developing safety-critical systems and supporting related regulatory compliance needs
  • Experience with 1 or more relevant domains: Industrial Automation, Robotic Vehicles/Manipulation, Autonomy, Perception and Controls
  • 9+ years of experience in integrated system design

Responsibilities

  • Define, expand, and explore the design space for complex, multidisciplinary robotics and automation problems
  • Identify and analyze the cross-functional tradeoffs between design alternatives, including impact on performance, schedule, cost, risk, complexity, and scale
  • Break down and frame problems using con-ops, use cases, structural/functional decompositions, and other system representations to clarify needs and align technical teams
  • Identify design choices to ensure our products are safe, reliable, and usable, and can be deployed and supported at Amazon scale
  • Build quantitative models and analyses (Excel, MATLAB, Python, internal tools) to conduct trade studies, refine requirements, and understand key system drivers across the integrated systems of systems
  • Perform technical risk assessments (such as TRL, Gap Analysis, FMEDA, HARA, etc.), devise mitigation plans, and create system test strategies
  • Develop and communicate system integration and evaluation strategies and plans in support of program learning, technical risk reduction, verification, and validation
  • Drive and prioritize execution of system test campaigns that span lab and field testing environments in collaboration with subsystem development and test teams (test readiness reviews, test execution, post-test analysis and reporting)
  • Guide and inform, via analyses, cross-functional architecture definition
  • Mentor junior engineers in engineering best practices, and participate in hiring of new team members

Benefits

  • health insurance (medical, dental, vision, prescription, Basic Life & AD&D insurance and option for Supplemental life plans, EAP, Mental Health Support, Medical Advice Line, Flexible Spending Accounts, Adoption and Surrogacy Reimbursement coverage)
