Our Americas Engineering Design Organization delivers comprehensive engineering services to the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries. We are actively expanding and diversifying our capabilities to support the transition to low-carbon energy solutions. These include Hydrogen, Ammonia, CO₂, Renewable Natural Gas (RNG), Natural Gas, Natural Gas Liquids (NGL), and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). To support this growth, we are seeking a Senior Instrumentation Engineer to join our team in either our Baton Rouge, LA or Houston, TX office. This role involves solving complex engineering challenges, conducting technical analyses, and collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders across all levels. The Senior Instrumentation Engineer will be responsible for designing instrumentation systems, components, and infrastructure in support of a wide range of energy projects.

Requirements

  • Professional Engineering (PE) License is required.
  • Background performing related design and engineering consulting services for a wide variety of industrial clients.
  • Strong working knowledge of P&ID's, instrumentation and instrumentation systems (DCS, PLC, and safety instrumented systems), process automation, etc.
  • Strong working knowledge of instrument and electrical design codes (ISA, NEC, API, etc.).
  • Familiarity with instrumentation used to measure and control flow, temperature, pressure, level and analytical properties.
  • Ability to perform wire sizing and voltage drop calculations.
  • Strong understanding of contractual agreements, accurate record keeping and documentation.
  • Proficiency in problem solving and troubleshooting.
  • Sense of urgency and good organizational skills required to work with multiple projects and conflicting priorities.
  • Positive attitude, good interpersonal skills, and validated time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lead a small team and deliver on commitments.
  • Effective communication with subordinates, peers, and superiors.
  • Proficiency in MS Office software.

Responsibilities

  • Lead instrument effort to provide project Instrument Engineering (FEL and detail design) for small to medium sized projects by working with project managers, project team members, end users and other design discipline engineers / design leaders.
  • Prepare engineering sketches, perform engineering calculations, and perform checking of engineering drawings.
  • Review and mark-up of instruments and controls on P&IDs to ensure compliance with company, client and ISA standards.
  • Prepare intermediate to advanced data sheets and specifications for project assignments detailing client performance requirements, specific component needs, design requirements, applicable design codes, and vendor drawing requirements.
  • Review and approve the selection of instrumentation suitable for different area classifications, such as Class 1 - Div1, Class 1 - Div2, and General Purpose.
  • Responsible for the selection and specification of various types of instrumentation for equipment, which include transmitters, gauges, switches, etc., for Pressure, Level, Temperature & Flow applications.
  • Prepare inquiry and purchase requisitions as well as bid tabulations associated with equipment purchases.
  • Review and/or approve vendor drawings for compliance with project specifications.
  • Actively participate in client hazard identification and observation studies (HAZOP).
  • Verify accuracy and completeness of all deliverable products and services in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Provide oversight of design staff engaged on projects along with the ability to mentor technical support staff.
  • Plan and manage workload, budgets and project resources.
  • Set realistic expectations and ensure assigned projects are completed according to schedule and within budget.
  • Work closely with the GHD teams to develop proposals and refine instrumentation design, ensuring alignment with project specifications, client best practices, and industry standards.
  • Compile discipline-specific man-hour estimates and Total Installed Cost estimates based on client provided project scope.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of instrumentation activities, including design changes, testing results, and project progress reports.
  • Provide engineering technical support to clients during all phases of project execution. (Design, construction, commissioning and startup)
  • Assist in the development of internal design guidelines, specifications, and design control procedures.
  • Manage client relationships and develop repeat business opportunities.
  • Uncover emerging issues or needs, identifying potential causes, barriers, and key stakeholders, as well as related issues.
  • Identify shortcomings in existing business practices, then suggest and implement improvements while developing and delivering projects or a work stream within the organization's change management program.
  • Drive a culture of innovation by creating multistakeholder solutions that boost creativity, innovation, and collaboration across business units.
  • Design engineering solutions and the associated validation process to enable the realization of a design brief.
  • Analyze information, draft engineering standards and specifications, and evaluate the effectiveness of those standards.
  • Analyze information and specify the methods and process steps, as well as the plant, machinery, and equipment, required to design and continuously improve manufacturing or materials processes.
  • Develop policies and processes, create best practices, set up case studies, and deliver internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
  • Translate installation monitoring and control policies into action plans.
  • Discuss and recommend more complex or innovative technical developments.
  • Lead and oversee the provision of professional supervision to ensure effective professional supervision.
  • Conduct complex feasibility studies from a technological and organizational perspective.
  • Manage a portfolio of projects while reporting to senior colleagues.
  • Manage important client relationships with guidance from senior colleagues.
