The Senior HVAC Systems Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems across the University’s campus. This role ensures optimal system performance, energy efficiency, and occupant comfort in academic, residential, and administrative facilities. The Senior Technician provides technical expertise, supports preventive maintenance programs, and may lead or mentor junior technicians while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certification in HVAC or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible HVAC experience.
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical components, and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair a wide range of HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handlers, rooftop units, and split systems.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control system issues to ensure timely resolution.
  • Perform system calibrations and adjustments to optimize performance and efficiency.
  • Execute and oversee preventive maintenance schedules for HVAC equipment.
  • Inspect systems regularly to identify potential issues and minimize downtime.
  • Maintain accurate service records and maintenance logs.
  • Monitor and maintain building automation systems (BAS) and energy management systems.
  • Adjust system controls to ensure proper temperature, humidity, and air quality levels.
  • Collaborate with IT or controls specialists as needed.
  • Assist with installation, replacement, and commissioning of HVAC systems and components.
  • Support capital improvement and renovation projects.
  • Recommend system upgrades to improve efficiency and reliability.
  • Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal regulations, including EPA and OSHA standards.
  • Follow all safety protocols and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Properly handle refrigerants in accordance with EPA guidelines.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior technicians and maintenance staff.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors for specialized repairs or projects.
  • Support campus events and respond to emergency maintenance calls as needed.
