About The Position

The Data Science and Health Economics Team provides advanced analytical support across VNS Health Plans. We leverage big data to develop insights and to support strategic decisions for the agency. Meaningful, appropriate use of data is central to the success of our organization. We are looking for an ambitious and curious senior health economics analyst to join our team.

Requirements

  • BS in Data Analytics, Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Econometrics, Epidemiology, Health Administration, or other quantitative field required; MS preferred.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in applied data analysis in the healthcare industry.
  • Experience with statistical/mathematical software (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, SAS) and data querying languages (e.g., SQL, PLSQL).
  • Solid understanding of relational databases.
  • Demonstrated experience executing reproducible and rigorous analyses.
  • Strong verbal, visual, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to translate business needs into relevant data-driven deliverables.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with healthcare data (e.g., medical claims, electronic medical records, clinical assessments).
  • Knowledge of healthcare financial terms (e.g., PMPM, Gross Margin) and coding systems (ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, NDC).
  • Experience in a managed care organization (e.g. Medicare Advantage or Managed Long-Term Care (MLTC)).
  • Knowledge of healthcare operations (utilization management, disease management, HEDIS quality measures, claims processing).
  • Experience with version control (e.g., GitHub).
  • Understanding of quasi-experimental methods such as propensity score matching or instrumental variable analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Join a core group of analysts generating strategic insights across VNS Health Plans.
  • Analyze medical expense utilization trends and root causes of utilization drivers.
  • Evaluate the impact of health care policy on patient populations, especially vulnerable members.
  • Assess new payment methods and their effects on quality care and cost management.
  • Identify vulnerable members and develop strategies to prevent or mitigate poor health outcomes.
  • Perform hands-on data analysis to solve complex business problems.
  • Collaborate with clinical/business stakeholders and executives.
  • Streamline data and modeling processes to create standard reproducible workflows.
  • Explore new data sources and investigate discrepancies in data.
