About The Position

Our Downtown Boise YMCA is seeking Senior Head Guards to join the team. This position ensures safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck and surrounding areas of the aquatic's facility. Senior Head Guards must additionally comply with all of the roles and responsibilities of Head Lifeguards. The Downtown Family YMCA opened its doors in 1964 and has since been a landmark in the Downtown Boise area. The facility has a full court basketball gym, a large cardio fitness center, multiple strength training systems and rooms, racquetball courts, a climbing wall, five fitness studios, three swimming pools, and multiple youth programming areas. Schedule: This is a full-time position at 40 hours weekly. Schedule requirements are Monday through Friday, with potential for nights and weekends as needed.

Requirements

  • Age - Must be 18 years of age or older upon hire.
  • Must be able to differentiate between colors (red, yellow, blue and green).
  • Ability to pass all standard safety drills with an 80% passing average.
  • Ability to coach and give feedback in a constructive manner.
  • Basic computer skills including experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated skills in planning, time management, flexibility, organization and independent work proficiency.
  • Adapt to multiple learning styles to assist in the development of staff.
  • Must be able to engage others in conversations and make all people feel welcome.
  • Ability to respond calmly and quickly to safety and emergency situations.
  • Must have good interpersonal and communications skills and be sensitive, adaptable, professional, and articulate when dealing with others.
  • First Aid - Prerequisite upon hire.
  • Oxygen- Prerequisite upon hire.
  • Basic Life Support- Prerequisite upon hire.
  • Y Lifeguard- Prerequisite upon hire.
  • Y Lifeguard Instructor- Prerequisite upon hire, 90 day compliance period.

Responsibilities

  • Create a safe environment for members and participants through active deck scanning, being on time and ready to respond quickly and appropriately while role modeling safe behavior.
  • Designated First Responder.
  • Engage members and participants in effective, age-appropriate communication. The down guard will actively engage with and encourage members during swim tests and lessons.
  • Develop intentional relationships and engage members.
  • Adhere to Aquatics Leading Practice Manual.
  • Provide professional and appropriate feedback to participants and members as needed.
  • Build relationships with members, participants and volunteers.
  • Promote teamwork and cooperative effort.
