This role is part of the Emerging Systems Business Unit, which will shape the future of our in-space infrastructure capabilities. As a Senior Hardware Engineer, you will play a vital leadership role within a team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, leading the design of the hardware for a space-based network. Your expertise in switching, Ethernet technologies, and high-speed bus design will be crucial in creating reliable and efficient communication systems that operate in the challenging environment of space. Your ability to innovate, provide architectural direction, and deliver efficient solutions is crucial to managing the entire development process. Successful senior engineers not only meet complex requirements but also propose and implement innovative, cutting-edge solutions. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field
  • 7+ years of experience in hardware engineering roles involving complex electronic systems
  • Experience with network hardware design including routers, switches, and related components
  • Experience with High-Speed Network Interfaces (10G/25G/100G)
  • Proficiency in circuit design, PCB layout, and hardware debugging techniques
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • Experience with space-qualified hardware design or avionics systems
  • Understanding of IP networking protocols (IPv4/IPv6), routing protocols, and packet switching
  • Knowledge of radiation effects on electronic components and mitigation techniques
  • Familiarity with FPGA design and implementation for networking applications
  • Familiarity with network security protocols and implementation in hardware
  • Understanding of fault-tolerant, fail-operational network designs
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing environments
  • Knowledge of DO-254 or similar certification processes for critical hardware
  • Experience with network timing protocols (PTP, NTP) and implementation
  • Proficiency with lab equipment for network testing and analysis
  • Experience with control interfaces such as PCIe, MDIO, SPI, I2C
  • Experience designing systems with DDR4/DDR5 DIMMs
  • Experience with tackling signal integrity issues and board mounted power design and distribution techniques

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of pioneering hardware solutions for Blue Origin’s TeraWave satellite communications network supporting IP (IPv4/IPv6), Ethernet, switching, routing, and forwarding table functionality
  • Architect and implement high-speed bus interfaces, including JESD204B/C for switching and routing applications
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation of designs, test procedures, and results
  • Develop and execute verification and validation plans for network hardware systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including avionics, software, and systems engineering to ensure seamless integration of network systems
  • Perform trade studies to evaluate hardware components and architectures for optimal performance in space environments
  • Design radiation-tolerant network hardware solutions that meet mission requirements
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware issues related to network communications
  • Support prototype unit build and test phases
  • Stay current with emerging technologies in networking hardware and telecommunications
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the technical growth of the team
