The Portland, OR office is seeking a Senior Engineer with expertise and practical experience in the analysis, design, and construction of hydraulic structures related to dams and reservoirs, canals, and levees to support our growing office and region. We are looking for experienced, motivated candidates with attention to detail, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of and provide leadership to a strong multi-disciplinary team. The Portland office of Schnabel focuses on the evaluation and design of dams, reservoir facilities, and hydraulic structures, as well as advancing our practice of risk informed decision making within our dam engineering group. Example projects include design of earth embankment and concrete dams, earth lined and/or concrete spillways, dam intakes and outlet systems, dam safety studies and risk assessments, water control, conveyance, pumping and measurement structures related to dams and reservoirs. Additional projects include municipal and agricultural water supply systems, including open channel and closed conduit flow.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or other related engineering discipline from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 8-15+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience with hydraulic and hydrologic analyses associated with dams.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) and the ability to obtain reciprocity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A strong work ethic, the desire to perform professionally at a high level, and oriented towards continual self-improvement.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Attention to detail and well-organized.
  • Effective time management and interpersonal skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Civil or related field
  • Direct experience with dam infrastructure regulated by FERC, USACE, or other federal/local agencies
  • Proficiency in hydrologic, hydraulic, and risk modeling, including HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS 2D, LifeSim, and RMC-BestFit. Experience with 3D numerical modeling
  • Experience performing dam break inundation and consequence analyses

Responsibilities

  • Develop and supervise hydrologic and hydraulic models, conduct risk and flood hazard analyses, and support the planning, design, and construction activities of water resources projects, including dams and levees, flood control, river restoration, and resiliency and climate adaptation efforts.
  • Analyze and design components related to dams, levees, spillway modifications, and riverine structures, including scoping and leading engineering evaluation and design tasks in one’s specific area of technical expertise.
  • Perform, review, and oversee design calculations, and the preparation of reports and presentations for water-related projects and programs.
  • Participate in risk assessments for dams and hydraulic structures.
  • Perform inspections of dams and hydraulic structures and collect data and measurements in the field.
  • Manage multidisciplinary infrastructure projects through concept, investigation, design, and construction phases including budget, schedule, coordination, and task scope.
  • Collaborate with and lead multidiscipline teams through the design process.
  • Perform management duties related to obtaining signed contracts, verification of time sheets, reviewing and approving invoices, developing, and tracking project schedules and budgets for subconsultants.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, business partners, subconsultants, and Schnabel team members.
  • Work as a team member within the Portland and Seattle offices, and across other Schnabel offices to effectively balance workload among available resources.
  • Proactively market and develop dam engineering business opportunities. Develop proposals for new work including scope of work, fee estimates, and client coordination.
  • Support marketing and business development across the country.
  • Manage and mentor junior engineers, commensurate with experience level.

  • Periodic travel will be required.
