About The Position

WVU Medicine is seeking an experienced, results-driven Senior Grant Strategist to lead enterprise-wide grant strategy and execution across the health system. This role is responsible for identifying, developing, and submitting high-value grant proposals that advance system priorities, including clinical program expansion, population health, workforce development, research infrastructure, innovation, and community impact. The Senior Grant Strategist serves as the centralized owner of the grant development lifecycle, partnering with executive leadership, clinical and operational teams, finance, legal, government relations, compliance, research administration, and philanthropy to secure external funding from federal, state, foundation, and philanthropic sources. This position operates as a senior individual contributor role with a strong focus on funding acquisition, competitiveness, and execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, health administration, public policy, healthcare management, communications, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of professional grant writing experience, preferably within healthcare, academic medicine, public health, or large nonprofit organizations.
  • Demonstrated success securing federal, state, and/or foundation grant funding.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent grant submissions under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and submitting competitive grant proposals, with the ability to manage the full grant lifecycle from opportunity identification through submission and post-award narrative reporting.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple concurrent grant submissions, deadlines, and internal approval processes.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across diverse stakeholder groups, including executive leadership, clinicians, researchers, finance, legal, compliance, philanthropy, and operational teams.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills to assess grant feasibility, competitiveness, and alignment with enterprise priorities.
  • Excellent written communication skills specific to grant development, including the ability to translate complex clinical, operational, and research initiatives into clear, funder-ready narratives.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy to ensure compliance with funder guidelines, submission requirements, and internal review standards.

  • Master’s degree in public health, health administration, public policy, healthcare management, or related field.
  • Experience working within an academic medical center or integrated health system.
  • Familiarity with federal funding agencies (e.g., NIH, HRSA, CDC, CMS, AHRQ), state funding mechanisms, and major health-focused foundations.
  • Experience supporting population health, workforce development, research infrastructure, or clinical program expansion initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies and evaluates grant opportunities aligned with defined enterprise priorities, in coordination with executive leadership and subject matter experts.
  • Leads the end-to-end execution of grant proposals, including proposal planning, narrative development, coordination of required documentation, and submission.
  • Develops and maintains a centralized enterprise grant pipeline, tracking opportunities, timelines, internal approvals, submissions, awards, and reporting requirements.
  • Serves as the primary point of coordination during grant development among clinical leaders, researchers, operational teams, finance, legal, compliance, philanthropy, and research administration.
  • Coordinates closely with Finance to develop grant budgets and justifications and with Legal and Compliance to ensure regulatory and contractual adherence.
  • Partners with Research Administration to align proposals with institutional research policies, sponsor requirements, and internal review processes, as applicable.
  • Leverages existing program documentation, outcomes data, and published research—developed in collaboration with research and communications partners—to strengthen grant competitiveness.
  • Ensures all submissions meet funder guidelines, quality standards, and internal approval requirements.
  • Provides regular updates to leadership on grant activity, including submissions, awards, funding totals, and success rates.
  • Maintains awareness of evolving funding trends, sponsor priorities, and regulatory requirements to inform enterprise grant strategy.
  • Works closely with Government Relations to identify grant opportunities, support advocacy efforts, and align funding pursuits with legislative and policy priorities.
