About The Position

This position conducts scientific work as part of the bedrock geology and/or surficial geology mapping programs at the Maine Geological Survey. The position designs and carries out geologic investigations that increase the collective knowledge of bedrock and surficial geology and related resources and hazards in Maine. The position communicates information about Maine geology to peers, stakeholders, and the public. The successful candidate in this position may: Perform geologic field work to map the bedrock or surficial geology of 7.5-minute US Geological Survey (USGS) quadrangles, using techniques and knowledge appropriate to field conditions and the geology of Maine. Provide quality control and enter geologic data into computer database systems. Design and produce geologic maps to professional standards using GIS software. Requirements

  • An eight (8) year combination of education and/or experience in geology or related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated experience collecting and analyzing various types of geologic field data such as: o Bedrock types and structures in the field. o Interpretation of exposures of surficial materials in the field.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently design and complete scientific research projects.
  • Demonstrated experience collecting and manipulating data with ESRI desktop software and mobile applications.
  • Ability to communicate scientific information to peers, lawmakers, and the public: o Write both technical and educational reports about geologic research, maps, hazards, and resources. o Present geologic information in oral format to diverse audiences including scientists, members of the public, and students.
  • Ability to work independently and safely in the field, in both populated and remote areas of the state.
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists and students in other State and Federal agencies and universities on geologic investigations.
  • Knowledge of the bedrock and surficial geologic history of Maine and surrounding states and provinces.
  • Knowledge of geologic hazards specific to Maine.
  • Experience creating and publishing detailed (1:24,000-scale) geologic maps.
  • Experience writing successful grant proposals and budgets.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with the USGS Geologic Mapping Schema (GeMS).
