About The Position

Our client in Normal, IL is looking for a Senior Functional Safety Engineer. This is a contract position. The role involves working with engineering, operations, and equipment vendors for design and commissioning activities, conducting Equipment Safety Buyoffs with a cross-functional team, and completing Risk Assessments in accordance with ISO 12100 and Rivian standards. The candidate must have experience with industrial machinery and either ISO 13849 or NFPA 79 & ANSI B11. The engineer will participate in equipment acceptance testing and commissioning, evaluate proposed changes to equipment and machinery for safety requirements, and develop equipment safety standards while continuously improving existing standards. The role also includes identifying safety opportunities, suggesting corrective actions, creating and delivering training related to equipment and machinery safety, maintaining detailed records of equipment compliance, and supporting department EHS staff as needed.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated familiarity with mechanical, electrical, automation, and control system design.
  • Experience with ANSI, UL, NFPA, ISO and other applicable standards.
  • Experience interpreting electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic safety circuits and evaluating performance level & circuit structure.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical circuit design in accordance with NEC, UL 508a, and NFPA 79.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Functional Safety Professional CFSP/CFSE.
  • Certified Machine Safety Expert.
  • Experience in Battery/EV Manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous area classifications, occupancy classification, hazardous material inventories.

Responsibilities
