About The Position

The Senior Forester position at the Florida Department of Military Affairs involves the management and oversight of forestry operations, including the implementation of the Forest Management Plan (FMP). The role requires reviewing and updating the FMP every five years, conducting timber assessments, and managing timber sale contracts. The Senior Forester will also be responsible for habitat improvement projects, fire management assistance, and the operation of forestry equipment. The position is based in Starke, FL, and requires a commitment to maintaining qualifications for wildland fire duties.

Requirements

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of professional work-related experience.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Ability to obtain a favorable National Agency Check background investigation clearance.
  • Ability to take annual medical monitoring physicals.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GIS mapping.
  • Knowledge of forestry management principles and practices.
  • Experience in grant writing and funding acquisition.
  • Familiarity with fire management practices.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the Forest Management Plan (FMP) and review it every five years.
  • Ensure GIS mapping of Camp Blanding forestry is accurate and up to date annually.
  • Conduct post wide timber assessments every five years.
  • Oversee timber sale contracts, site preparation for reforestation, and timber inventory.
  • Develop and write scopes of work for logging and tree planting contracts.
  • Manage reforestation efforts and coordinate with conservation sections for endangered species.
  • Search and apply for grants to fund reforestation requirements.
  • Implement various revenue streams such as Palmetto Barry sales and Apiary Lease agreements.
  • Plan and implement habitat improvement projects in coordination with Environmental personnel.
  • Provide fire management assistance, including prescribed burning and fire hazard identification.
  • Operate light to heavy equipment for maintenance of training sites.
  • Apply herbicides for pine release and invasive control.
  • Conduct minor maintenance on forestry equipment.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
