About The Position

Apex Waste Solutions is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Fleet Mechanic to lead the maintenance and repair efforts for our specialized fleet of waste collection and hauling vehicles. This fleet includes refuse trucks, roll-offs, front/rear loaders, and support equipment essential to daily waste collection and environmental service operations. The ideal candidate brings strong technical capabilities, leadership, and a safety-first mindset to ensure minimal downtime and operational excellence across all routes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required. Technical certification or associate degree in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or heavy equipment repair preferred.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in vehicle maintenance, with 2+ years in a senior technician or lead mechanic role, ideally within the waste, municipal services, or heavy-duty fleet sectors.
  • Valid state driver's license required; CDL Class B or A strongly preferred.
  • Deep understanding of hydraulics, braking systems, emissions controls, and refuse vehicle mechanics.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Hands-on experience with diagnostic tools and electronic repair manuals.
  • Working knowledge of waste-specific fleet management platforms.
  • Leadership capabilities with a focus on safety, teamwork, and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex diagnostics and repairs on a range of solid waste vehicles (e.g., hydraulic compactors, front-end loaders, automated side loaders) and support equipment. Ensure all work adheres to OEM guidelines, DOT regulations, and safety standards.
  • Design and execute preventive maintenance schedules focused on high-utilization waste vehicles. Optimize vehicle uptime and performance across varying environmental and operational conditions.
  • Lead, train, and mentor a team of mechanics and service technicians, promoting continuous improvement and skill development.
  • Assign and review work orders to ensure quality, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Foster a positive, safety-first culture where teamwork and respect are at the core of daily operations.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings and participate in monthly maintenance and operations meetings.
  • Manage shop inventory and parts purchasing, ensuring cost-effective sourcing and minimal downtime.
  • Track maintenance costs, assist with budget preparation, and report key performance metrics to management.
  • Recommend improvements to maintenance procedures, vendor relations, and equipment lifecycle planning.
  • Maintain detailed electronic records of repairs, inspections, and service intervals using fleet maintenance software systems tailored for waste fleet operations
  • Conduct regular safety inspections to ensure all vehicles comply with OSHA, DOT, and local municipal waste codes. Lead safety briefings and corrective action plans for non-compliance issues.
  • Ensure all repairs and maintenance meet DOT, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote and enforce all Apex Waste Solutions safety policies, maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
  • Support company-wide safety and environmental initiatives.
  • Respond swiftly to breakdowns on collection routes, prioritizing quick-turn repairs or recovery logistics to avoid service disruptions in critical waste pickup zones.
  • Support cross-functional operations as needed, including route audits, seasonal fleet preparation, and environmental incident readiness.
