About The Position

Jensen Hughes is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Fire Alarm System Designer / Consultant to join our team. This role is responsible for the design, evaluation, and consulting of fire alarm and mass notification systems across a variety of project types. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise, strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards, and the ability to lead projects and collaborate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams.

Requirements

  • Five (5) or more years of progressive experience in fire alarm system design, consulting, or inspection.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and REVIT.
  • Strong working knowledge of NFPA codes, life safety standards, and local jurisdictional requirements.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technically sound design strategies.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting client and schedule commitments.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, fire protection, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • Proficiency with Aspire software.
  • NICET certification in Fire Alarm Systems preferred, NICET Level IV strongly preferred.
  • Experience with mass notification systems and integrated life safety solutions preferred.
  • Professional licensure in Electrical or Fire Protection Engineering is a plus.
  • Candidates with significant industry experience in fire protection design, inspection, or code consulting who are not on a traditional engineering track will also be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute fire alarm and mass notification system design from concept through construction, including system layouts, device placement, riser diagrams, sequences of operation, and calculations (battery, voltage drop, etc.).
  • Develop detailed, code-compliant fire alarm drawings, including shop drawings, specifications, and technical reports using AutoCAD, REVIT, and similar design tools.
  • Review architectural and engineering drawings to ensure life safety and fire code compliance.
  • Act as the owner’s representative for fire alarm systems during design, construction, and commissioning phases
  • Conduct site assessments and field surveys to evaluate existing conditions and fire alarm installations.
  • Review design, shop drawing, and construction submittals for compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
  • Support testing, commissioning, and acceptance activities, including preparation of test plans, witnessing tests, and documenting results.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with engineers, architects, contractors, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), and internal project teams.
  • Interface directly with clients to communicate technical findings, recommendations, and project status.
  • Manage technical aspects of projects, including schedules, workload planning, and adherence to approved scopes of work.
  • Support financial performance by contributing to project budgeting and resource management.
  • Stay current on applicable codes, standards, and emerging technologies (e.g., NFPA 72, NFPA 70, IBC).
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff, including support for NICET development and training.
  • Assist business development efforts by supporting proposals, technical approaches, and pursuit activities as needed.
