Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is seeking to fill the position of Senior Financial and Compliance Coordinator. This position will support the core accounting operations while serving as a reliable back-up to senior accounting staff and managers. The ideal candidate will bring a strong acumen for general accounting expertise, a deep understanding of compliance and reporting, and the ability to step into higher-level responsibilities when needed. The position is designed for progressive development across all areas of the accounting department. Depending on the timing of onboarding, the Senior Financial and Compliance Coordinator may begin by focusing on accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger work to gain familiarity with organizational processes. As the audit and tax season approaches, the role will expand to include time-sensitive responsibilities such as 1099 filings, audit preparation, and tax compliance. Over time, the individual will develop expertise across all accounting functions and serve as a reliable back-up to senior accounting staff and managers. This position reports directly to the Chief Finance Officer whose expectations are the expectations of a high performer. She has an open door and goes above and beyond to support her team, expects timely completion of deliverables and the ability to accept and learn from feedback. This position will work independently and collectively with a team to seamlessly deliver all accounting and financial functions and activities.

  • Manage the full AP/AR cycle, including invoice processing, payment execution, and recording of receipts and deposits.
  • Maintain and reconcile GL accounts, ensuring accurate classification and allocation of all entries.
  • Lead assigned areas of the month-end and year-end close process, preparing journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules for timely reporting.
  • Reconcile multiple bank accounts, promptly addressing discrepancies.
  • Prepare and record cost allocation and transfer entries in accordance with the organization’s cost allocation plan.
  • Compile and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
  • Prepare and file quarterly unrelated business income taxes, manage scheduled tax payments, prepare and file annual chapter income tax returns, and issue 1099s.
  • Provide documentation and schedules for internal and external audits.
  • Assist in budget preparation, monitor actual performance, and support forecasting activities.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards, nonprofit regulations, and internal controls while maintaining confidentiality and integrity in all financial matters.
  • Serve as a back-up to senior accountants and the accounting managers, developing the knowledge and skills required to assume higher-level responsibilities when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the successful operations and delivery of the Finance Department goals and objectives.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a senior-level role.
  • Minimum of 2 years supervising or managing accounting staff, with demonstrated ability to provide guidance, review work for accuracy, and support team development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required). CPA certification (active or in progress) strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting practices, tax compliance, and audit preparation.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (MIP preferred), online banking platforms, advanced Microsoft Excel skills for financial analysis and reporting.
  • Experience with state and federal tax return e-filing and payment systems. Previous experience with the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System is a plus.
  • Ability to analyze financial data, identify trends, and clearly communicate findings.
  • Strong written and verbal communication to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Highly detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated initiative and readiness to serve as a backup for senior staff and the Accounting Manager.

  • May require travel to attend conferences and meetings.
  • During meetings, conferences or conventions work may include long days, as early as 5:00 a.m. until midnight and some weekends.
