About The Position

The Asset Management Property Operations Department is responsible for protecting and enhancing the value of City-owned real estate assets and serving the operational needs of tenant businesses. In addition, the Department assists EDC in the allocation of resources among its properties. Your Role: This is a field position that will provide technical leadership and operational oversight for a diverse campus of industrial, commercial, and waterfront assets located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of complex building systems across multiple facilities while supporting the long-term stewardship of public assets. The Senior Facility & Building Engineer is a highly skilled, hands-on technical professional responsible for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of building systems. This role works directly in the field, leading by example while ensuring building infrastructure operates safely, efficiently, and reliably. The position supports critical systems, performs advanced repairs, and provides technical guidance to junior staff and vendors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Facilities, or related field) or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in facilities engineering, building operations, or infrastructure management.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing complex building systems across multiple assets.
  • Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical distribution, plumbing, and building codes.
  • Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS), CMMS, and system integration.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and technical problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong knowledge of NYC building codes, regulatory agencies, and inspection processes.
  • Proven experience leading vendors, consultants, and capital projects.
  • Ability to make independent technical decisions and exercise sound judgment in high-impact situations.
  • Familiarity with sustainability, energy benchmarking, and resiliency planning.
  • This is an onsite position that requires a 5-day presence at Sunset Park Campus. The work schedule may include weekend coverage and is subject to manager approval/consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior-level oversight and hands-on maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of building systems, including HVAC, electrical distribution, plumbing, fire/life safety, and building automation systems.
  • Serve as the primary technical authority for diagnosing system failures, identifying root causes, and performing corrective and preventive solutions.
  • Establish standards and best practices for building operations, maintenance, and system performance across the campus.
  • Review and approve technical scopes of work, engineering recommendations, and system designs.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance calls, including after-hours when required.
  • Oversee day-to-day facilities engineering activities across multiple buildings and asset types, ensuring continuity of operations.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and infrastructure to assess condition, safety, and compliance.
  • Support emergency response and after-hours incident resolution related to building systems.
  • Lead and manage third-party vendors, contractors, and consultants providing maintenance, repair, and engineering services.
  • Review proposals, negotiate scopes, monitor performance, and approve invoices to ensure quality, compliance, and cost effectiveness.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to facilities staff and building operators as applicable.
  • Lead and support capital improvement projects, major system replacements, and infrastructure upgrades from planning through closeout.
  • Partner with project managers, architects, and engineers to ensure constructability, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
  • Support asset condition assessments, deferred maintenance planning, and long-term capital forecasting.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including NYC DOB, FDNY, OSHA, EPA, and environmental requirements.
  • Lead fire/life safety programs, inspections, testing, and corrective actions.
  • Identify operational risks and develop mitigation strategies to protect public assets, tenants, and occupants.
  • Support energy management, sustainability, and climate resiliency initiatives aligned with City and agency goals.
  • Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, and enhance system resilience.
  • Assist with data collection and reporting related to energy use, system performance, and compliance requirements.
  • Serve as a senior technical point of contact for internal stakeholders, tenants, and partner agencies.
  • Communicate complex technical issues clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Support the agency’s mission by maintaining facilities that enable economic development, job creation, and public benefit.
  • Smart building systems: Implement and maintain advanced technology like building automation systems (BAS) to monitor and control HVAC, lighting, and security remotely.
  • Upgrades and innovations: Stay up to date with emerging technologies and trends in building management to keep the building functioning optimally.
  • During snow events that require removal duties, coordinate with a team to plan removal duties and contractors to ensure coverage.
