About The Position

Operates vehicles and other equipment for the Public Works Department in performing duties related to solid waste, construction, right-of-way and street maintenance. This position completes multifaceted tasks using large industrial machinery and trains as well as monitors other workers.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must possess knowledge in the operation of all vehicles, equipment and other Division specific tasks such as Scale House operation, snow plowing/removal and calculating quantities for asphalt and concrete repairs.
  • Must p ossess a valid Class B Arizona commercial driver's license (CDL) at the time hire.
  • Knowledge of the operation of all vehicles, equipment , and scale house operations .
  • Knowledge of the operation of all solid waste collection vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic preventative maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the proper placement of barricades and signage for road and lane closures needed for the protection of workers, vehicles and pedestrians .
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of the mechanical operation of heavy diesel-powered construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic supervisory methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic project management.
  • Skill in o perating and working around moving equipment .
  • Skill in operating backhoe, loader, motor grader, paving equipment, mowers, large brush chipper, and small tools, (jack hammer, target saw, chainsaw, weed eater, and blower) .
  • Skill in safely operating miscellaneous construction equipment and recognizing hazards.
  • Skill in utilizing customer service techniques when responding to inquiries and complai nts.
  • Skill in using a variety of computer and tablet software including maintenance management software, time entry software, and Windows computer applications such as Outlook.
  • Skill in resolving issues from field employees and acting as point of contact for staff members.
  • Ability to direct moving vehicles and pedestrians with authority in a polite and professional manner.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicat e in one-on-one and group situations
  • Ability to make decisions as needed related to daily field work.
  • Ability to plan and execute training programs regarding operation of all types of equipment and safe operating practices.

  • Ability to read , follow and comprehend road traffic diagrams, regulations and instructions in English.
  • Safely operates required vehicles and equipment necessary in performance of required duties .
  • Requires working Tuesday through Saturday or any combination of day s to meet the Division's needs.
  • May r equire working a rotational scheduling including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Safely sees clearly, with correction if necessary, during both day and evening hours and in potentially adverse weather conditions.
  • C learly, concisely , and effectively communicate s , in person and over the telephone.
  • Safely lift s , push es , pull s, and carries 50 pounds and 75 po u nds with assistance .
  • Work i s performed in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to self or others.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years' experience operating heavy equipment or driving commercial vehicles is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the supervisor to ensure daily tasks and assignments are covered and completed in a safe and timely manner; i dentifies equipment needs for assigned projects; make recommendations to the supervisor or manager regarding equipment conditions and repairs needed.
  • Assists management in observing and enforcing the requirements of all traffic laws, ordinances, and City of Prescott Personnel Rules.
  • Leads, plans, and participates in all related aspects of the daily activities for assigned operational area; assigns tasks to crews .
  • Trains, coaches, and mentors staff; instructs personnel in appropriate behavioral and performance standards in order to be consistent with assigned D ivision, D epartment, and City-wide goals and objectives .
  • Provides leadership to other Solid Waste , Street Maintenance and Admin support s staff.
  • Oversees and assists welding and fabricating safety rails ; shouldering and erosion control; and drainage work.
  • O versees the operation and maintenance of the Transfer Station operates scale and computer equipment related to the Transfer Station O perations ; and maintains cleanliness of facilities and surrounding area .
  • Operates a motor vehicle s and other equipment for the City to perform a variety of construction, public roads maintenance, street sweeping, vegetation management duties, and drain age installation/repairs.
  • Operates solid waste collection equipment in the collection of commercial, residential, or uncontained solid waste collection route; utilizes proper safety precautions related to work performed.
  • Operates City vehicles and equipment such as an automated side-load refuse collection vehicle, an automated front-load refuse collection vehicle, a roll-off refuse collection vehicle, a backhoe, an articulated loader, and a stationary boom crane.
  • Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip DOT inspection checks for assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs maintenance on / removes, and lays asphalt; removes, forms, and finishes concrete; performs maintenance and installs guardrail, safety rail and handrail; performs street maintenance and right-of-way work with crews or individually; sweeps streets; plows snow; and spreads cinders on roads.
  • Performs vegetation management duties.
  • Performs basic drainage maintenance and construction including ditch grading/cleaning, culvert cleaning, and installation by manual and mechanical means; clean catch basins and other drainage structures.
  • Uses power tools and equipment such as: backhoe, loader, portable jackhammer, dump truck, water truck, street sweeper, motor grader, paver, roller weed eater , and chainsaw .
  • Works in close proximity to moving traffic and pedestrians.
  • Fells trees; applies herbicides for weed management.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment; sets up and operates grade checking equipment including builder's levels and laser levels; and performs daily safety checks of vehicles and equipment.
  • Reads street/road signs, maps, and handwritten/typewritten material.
  • M ake s decisions as needed related to daily field work .
  • Trains prospective drivers for commercial driver's license exam.
  • Adheres to safety rules; a ssist s with and participate s in safety programs as required by OSHA including job hazard assessments, training, and use of proper personal protective equipment.
  • Performs office duties including answering phones, submitting work orders in Lucity , tracking collection routes on LiGo , auditing routes, writing memos, and dispatching drivers.
  • Provides face to face and over the phone customer service; r espond s to customer complaints and issues, requests for service, and inquiries related to solid waste collection and Street Maintenance service s .
  • Ensures proper records, daily logs, time sheet information, incidents reports , carry-out requests, and other operational data are entered into Munis, Lucity and dedicated Solid Waste Drive.
  • Recommends and assists in the im p lementation of organizational goals and objectives ; implements policies and procedures.
  • A ssume s responsibilities of the supervisor during his or her absence .
  • Maintain City equipment in clean, safe operating condition.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
