Requirements

  • Two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles.
  • A Class 'E' driver's license is required at time of hire.
  • Obtain a CDL Class 'A' Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment and a CDL Class 'A' license within 10 months of appointment.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year.

  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations and standard safety rules and procedures.
  • Skills in operating a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to operate a variety of heavy equipment and train others.

Responsibilities

  • Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment including road graders, sewer cleaners, and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.
  • Performs minor maintenance and servicing work on equipment operated, including checking and adding fluids, adjusting brakes, and maintaining proper air pressure in tires.
  • Assists in the repair of operated equipment and cleans and washes equipment.
  • Oversees crews performing maintenance activities and coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
  • Maintains records of operation and prepares daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle checklists.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and basic Temporary Traffic Control.
