Discover your story with Adaptive. The Sr Equipment Engineer provides site-wide support for clinical operations activities. Responsibilities will include the installation, maintenance, and performance of cutting-edge laboratory equipment along with documenting activities in accordance with regulatory compliance guidelines. Supporting laboratory equipment will range widely but will include next-generation sequencing platforms and automated liquid handling robots and provide leadership to junior team members. This position will be working in close collaboration with the clinical lab staff and multi-functional teams. Strong interpersonal and troubleshooting skills are essential for success in this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelors in engineering or science, 7+ yrs. related experience.
  • Masters in science or engineering, 5+ yrs. related experience.
  • PhD in Science or Engineering, 2+ yrs. related experience.
  • Experience with laboratory integrations of hardware (e.g. liquid handlers, environmental sensors) with software platforms (e.g., LIMS, log management services, schedulers, orchestrators, etc.).
  • Strong record of authoring plans, protocols, and reports for equipment qualification and validation, design input requirements, and specifications consistent with customer needs.
  • Experience solving highly complex problems by identifying and proposing viable and often innovative engineering solutions.
  • Expert experience with commercial automated liquid handling platforms (e.g., Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman, ThermoFisher, Formulatrix, etc.), benchtop lab equipment (e.g., sequencers, handheld pipettes, thermocyclers, centrifuges, plate readers, tube pickers, tube capper/decapper), and monitoring systems.
  • Excellent communication skills as a project leader and a working knowledge of project management, especially with regards to risk identification and mitigation, alignment with company goals, and adherence to deliverable timelines.
  • Proven ability to gather requirements, optimize processes, and design lab solutions to support the business.
  • Strong record of authoring, reviewing, and approving plans, protocols, and reports for equipment qualification and validation, design input requirements, and specifications consistent with customer needs.
  • Experience with NGS laboratory operations in Regulated environments (e.g., ISO, CLIA, CAP, CLEP, GxP, FDA).
  • Experience with Agile or DevOps practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience 3+ years of using programming languages (e.g., VB, Python, C#, JavaScript) to enhance off-the-shelf functionality of lab and facility equipment; experience with version control systems (e.g, Git).
  • Experience with analytical and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, SQL, R).
  • Experience automating metric reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Partners cross-functionally to propose and deploy equipment solutions that meet functional requirements and prioritize reliability, scalability, and efficiency.
  • Execute Equipment Lifecycle Management processes and procedures by supporting and maintaining equipment records for traceability purposes.
  • Performs hardware and software integrations with software platforms (e.g., LIMS, log management services, schedulers, orchestrators, etc.) with lab equipment (e.g., liquid handlers) for enhanced capabilities or observability.
  • Supports equipment and automation development lifecycles, with emerging emphasis on multiple lifecycle phases.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for relevant business and laboratory processes or equipment; drives ideation and implements continuous improvement projects for processes and workflows.
  • Consults and/or analyzes business cases for development and operations using a data-driven approach; may support service contract negotiations.
  • Prepares, reviews and approves documents (e.g., protocols, reports, nonconformances, risk assessments, change control requests) to ensure compliance in Quality environment.
  • Develops training programs for end users and serves as a technical coach or project lead for internal group projects.
  • Drives equipment and automation development lifecycles, with expert emphasis on end-to-end management.
  • May drive the creation of complex and novel processes (e.g. automated system development, service contract insourcing, proactive maintenance initiatives, automated log data analyses) to meaningfully reduce operational costs, advance performance observability, or meet other business needs.
  • Develops training programs, serves as technical coach and mentor, and appropriately delegates project-related tasks for lower-level Equipment Engineers.
  • Demonstrates mastery of CCR process to propose and evaluate novel approaches for developing and implementing process changes.
  • Provides technical input for service contract negotiations as needed.
  • All other duties as assigned.
