About The Position

HNTB is seeking a senior environmental scientist to join its Environmental, Climate Resilience and Sustainability team within the NY Planning & Mobility department. This role involves leading environmental planning, documentation, and permitting tasks for major transportation clients, while providing oversight and guidance to junior professionals. The position requires a mix of office and field duties, including environmental reviews, wetland delineation, and permit preparation, all in compliance with various environmental regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology, or related field and 8 years relevant experience, or a Master's Degree in the same fields with 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with state and local permitting, including NYSDEC, NYSDOS, and NYCDEP.
  • Experience with federal environmental permitting, including USACE and USCG.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Highly collaborative and proactive communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with GPS/GIS mapping, data development & management, GIS/CADD integration, and finished map production.
  • Experience with New York State Department of Transportation and other New York City agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the collection and analysis of data for projects under minimal direction.
  • Determine or develop best methodologies and technical approaches for conducting field analysis.
  • Examine and evaluate potential environmental science effects related to project planning, design, and construction.
  • Serve as task lead or principal author in preparing reports on environmental science effects of projects.
  • Provide technical scientific support on environmental issues to project managers during project phases.
  • Review work to ensure compliance with design criteria and scientific specifications, determining the need for additional investigations if necessary.
  • Participate in marketing and proposal preparation for potential projects.
  • Lead the preparation of applications and supporting documents for environmental permits and regulatory compliance.
  • Organize and participate in public meetings and discussions on environmental science issues.
  • Mentor junior staff and provide performance feedback.
