About The Position

The Sr. Environmental Manager (SEM) is responsible for the implementation of company policies and procedural plans related to all environmental media, including air, stormwater, groundwater, solid waste, and/or hazardous waste. The SEM supports corporate and divisional environmental programs to promote compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws. The SEM will also assist with national environmental initiatives and special projects located outside of the primary regional assignment. The SEM maintains regional metals recycling and automobile salvage facilities in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws, standards, and permits and has responsibility for maintaining facility compliance with applicable environmental permit conditions. The SEM has direct responsibility for these compliance activities through management of the Environmental Managers (EMs) within their assigned region. This position has direct responsibility for conducting on-site field work associated with sampling, monitoring, observing, recording, preparing reports, records, and plans required by regulatory permits, plans, or agreements and direct responsibility in assisting the EMs in their region with successful completion of these duties at their assigned facilities. The SEM maintains a key role in the overall planning, design, installation, and operation of pollution control equipment and associated metering and/or measuring devices throughout their Region. The SEM assists with the development and delivery of training programs and provides other advice to EMs and facility operations management on the practical and necessary steps to prevent or abate pollution arising from operations and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements contained within a variety of environmental permits, plans, policies, and regulations. The SEM may also provide first line immediate environmental emergency responses to incidents, spills, releases, and accidents. The SEM's incident response duties may include any region as needed. The SEM provides appropriate notifications to management and regulatory agencies and assists with site investigations and remediation projects related to due diligence activities and other identified environmental issues. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of environmental management throughout their assigned Region. This is to be accomplished while providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, efficiently and in compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements; while reducing the frequency of accidents, errors, and compliance deviations; and increasing profits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree, with preference for engineering or science background including environmental science, chemistry, geology, or biology AND ten years' experience with environmental regulations; sampling for testing air, water, soil, and hazardous waste; designing, installing, and operating pollution control equipment; and negotiating environmental requirements with regulatory agencies; OR
  • Associates degree, and a minimum of twelve years' experience with environmental regulations; sampling for testing air, water, soil, and hazardous waste; designing, installing, and operating pollution control equipment; and negotiating environmental requirements with regulatory agencies; OR
  • A combination of education, experience and knowledge that equals the criteria outlined above.
  • Current environmental compliance knowledge and experience in the assigned region.
  • Sufficient education or experience in technical fieldwork required. Preference for person trained or certified in hazardous materials handling, clean-up, or response (PE, RG, CEM or CHMM). Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental programs and regulations with approved sampling techniques and procedures.
  • This position requires possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to drive an automobile.

Responsibilities

  • Develops programs and tools to prepare and appropriately maintain high quality environmental records and reports.
  • Ensures incident analyses and associated investigations are completed in order to implement necessary corrective
  • Reviews incident response efforts with EM-level staff to assess appropriate follow up action and opportunities for improvement.
  • Assists as requested, in the planning, review, design, implementation and oversight of remedial actions involving multiple media under various federal, state, and local jurisdictions. Includes developing appropriate work scopes, requesting, and reviewing proposals, selecting consultants & contractors, establishing budgets for management approval, scheduling work in coordination with operations, managing activities to maintain budget and schedule, reporting status and end results to management and regulatory agencies, as necessary.
  • Assists in efforts to achieve specific waste reduction/minimization at regional
  • Collects, evaluates, and disseminates pertinent information relating to environmental compliance requirements and maintains appropriate reference files.
  • Advises senior management, regional management and operating managers concerning the organization's environmental objectives and assists in determining and implementing corrective actions to ensure consistency in company regulatory compliance efforts.
  • Recommends changes in procedures, design, or equipment when
  • Represents the organization at public and/or private discussions including technical forums, regulatory hearings, legal actions, or other public meetings.
  • Maintains relationships with outside associations concerned with environmental protection, regulatory officials, and local politicians.
  • Assists, as requested, in efforts to develop, plan, and manage environmental investigations associated with past operations and sites being evaluated for acquisition or sale.
  • Provides oversight and management of work performed by various consultants and contractors, as well as coordination with both in-house and outside legal counsel.
  • Plans, conducts, and/or supervises consultants completing environmental research or other project assignments.
