Reporting to the Senior Director – Development, the Senior Environmental Manager leads environmental activities across development, construction and operations for projects in the U.S. portfolio. This role is responsible for implementing and supervising the company’s environmental objectives and mandate as well as introducing measures to improve overall organization of environmental priorities for the U.S. team.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience in the environmental elements of development, construction. and/or operation of renewable energy projects (one or more of hydro, wind, solar an asset).
  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in Environmental Studies or similar.
  • Experience working with and managing specialist consultants.
  • Relevant work experience with environmental, permitting and discipline management in the renewable energy industry required.
  • Experience with county, state and federal regulatory agencies, and U.S. environmental permitting jurisdictions where Innergex is active.
  • Proven ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams and to interact with diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to think and act both strategically and tactically. Aptitude to assess and prioritize needs, establish direction, and successfully drive issues to a conclusion.
  • Experience overseeing technical consultants using a comprehensive approach to match technical work requirements with Innergex project objectives.
  • Ability to consider project activities and expenditures in the context of return on investment, in conjunction with project managers, Executives and Finance department.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, oral, computer).
  • Proven ability to operate autonomously.
  • A driver’s license in good standing is required as well as experience with driving 4-wheel-drive vehicles.
  • A passport and ability to travel outside of U.S. to Canada.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, with emphasis on Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Ability to identify explicit and implied stakeholders’ needs by asking probing questions and understanding requirements.
  • Ability to establish working relationships with stakeholders and build rapport to become a trusted advisor.
  • Ability to identify strategic issues to help stakeholders understand their wider business challenges and recommend solutions that meet their business needs.
  • Stays up to date with best practices and institutes standards within function to ensure that the team stays up to date.
  • Develops advanced recommendations and solutions by leveraging multiple sources of data.
  • Builds advanced knowledge of programs and tools and makes improvement or development recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the U.S. development, construction, and operations teams, provide technical expertise, leadership, management, and execution of environmental services / management.
  • Leading environmental elements of internal multi-disciplinary project teams working on development, construction and operation of new renewable energy projects or expansion of existing operating projects.
  • Providing effective progress reporting (verbal and written) to the Senior Director – Development and, as required, others in senior management.
  • Coordinating project-level environmental, social, archaeological studies and activities.
  • Selecting, securing and managing external environmental consultants engaged to fulfill the company’s project environmental requirements.
  • Preparing technical documentation and meeting with the various stakeholders and governmental regulatory agencies to secure or amend key project permits.
  • Leading environmental elements at public / community open houses or similar informational events with stakeholders, residents, or other interest groups.
  • Preparing and reviewing strategy, schedules, scopes of work, and budgets.
  • Maintaining comprehensive understanding of environmental regulations in key jurisdictions where Innergex is active (federal, provincial/state, county, and municipal level).
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with strategic federal, provincial/state and county regulatory agencies to ensure timely approvals for projects and for streamlining regulatory requirements.
  • Representing Innergex in industry organizations with a focus on environmental regulatory, permitting and technical advancement (e.g., American Clean Power Association) and establishing professional relationships with key industry influencers.
  • Implementation, and advocacy with other employees, of Innergex’s environmental policies, standards, company plans and policies.
  • Leading response to environmental issues that arise in operating projects, including risk assessment.
  • Implementing environmental best practices for operating assets, including annual training and reporting activities.
  • Supporting projects during construction by attending recurring meetings and ensuring ongoing compliance with permit obligations.
  • Performing on-site training for construction staff and acting as lead for supporting environmental monitoring, if needed.
  • Willing for reasonable travel as needed to support project activities.
  • Mentoring other environmental team members and advising on overall internal resource needs.
  • Performing other technical tasks to support the development, construction, and operation of Innergex projects and U.S. team responsibilities, as required.
