We are looking for an experienced Senior Environmental Engineer to join the team at our Whitehall, MT operation. This key role is responsible for managing site reclamation and closure programs and supporting the development and maintenance of critical federal and state permits associated with the site’s Plan of Operations, administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), as well as state permits overseen by the Montana Division of Environmental Quality and other regulatory agencies. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Hydrology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering, or related field required
  • Five (5) years direct experience in environmental compliance and permitting role, including regulatory agency interactions required
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills required
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously required
  • Familiarity with compliance systems and ISO 14001 required.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s Degree in Hydrology or Hydrogeology preferred.
  • Experience in a surface and/or underground mining environment preferred
  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead the comprehensive development and execution of site closure plans, including the completion of any necessary studies and mitigation activities crucial for the successful closure of inactive facilities.
  • Oversee the site's reclamation permits, and effectively manage the reclamation cost model, reclamation surety bonds, and long-term trusts.
  • Oversee the site’s closure related Water Pollution Control permit compliance and reporting program
  • Coordinate with site personnel and the regional NGM/BGNA permitting teams to successfully facilitate federal and state permitting actions including completion of cultural, wildlife, and other baseline studies.
  • Successfully implement and manage Federal environmental compliance requirements.
  • Interpret monitoring data related to water quality, geochemistry, vegetation, and other material characterization.
  • Lead and develop Environmental Engineers and Technicians
  • Engage with regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders.
  • Direct wildlife surveying and reporting activities for sensitive species.
  • Oversee the noxious weed abatement program.
  • Support the spatial data management (GIS) program for the Department.
  • Ensure conformance with the company Mine Closure Standard.
  • Assist with training NGM employees and contractors regarding safety and environmental requirements.
  • Budget management including development, forecasting and tracking of program costs
  • Responsible for periodic, after-hours on-call response to environmental incidents, as needed.
  • This position requires the ability to regularly walk over uneven, sloped, rocky, wet or icy ground and the ability to lift 40 or more pounds consistently and safely.
  • Oversee inspections of operations to ensure permit compliance including accompanying regulatory inspectors on periodic inspections of work areas on and off the mine site.
  • Oversee and provide guidance for hydrologic investigations and reporting.
  • Lead major and/or complex permitting activities.
  • Coordinate permitting activities associated with the water management needs of the site, including review of application/modification designs and packages.
  • Lead and develop Environmental Engineers, Specialists, and Technicians, as assigned, by overseeing the maintenance, evaluation, and reporting of collected data to Barrick management and governmental agencies.
  • Align work practices with BGNA Health, Safety, and Environmental ISO 14001 and 45001 standards. Lead by example and promote Safety and Environmental programs and initiatives.
  • Provide supervision and support of well drilling and design.
  • Work with multiple stakeholders with varying levels of management and expertise across the local site, NGM, and Barrick Gold North America.
  • Coordinate with company subject-matter experts on complex compliance or water related issues.
  • Review and analyze water level data and water quality samples from monitoring wells.
  • Review and analyze water quality parameters and determine geochemical trends.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
