Nevada Gold Mines (NGM) is seeking a qualified Senior Environmental Engineer with expertise in mine closure planning and permitting to join the Environmental Team at our Carlin operation. This key role is responsible for managing site reclamation and closure programs and supporting the development and maintenance of critical federal and state permits associated with the site’s Plan of Operations, administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), as well as state permits overseen by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) and other regulatory agencies. The successful candidate will also lead a team dedicated to ensuring full regulatory compliance with approved plans and permits, while fulfilling company commitments and standards related to environmental stewardship and biodiversity. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Mine Engineering, Geology, Ecology or related field required
  • Minimum seven (7) years direct experience in environmental compliance
  • Minimum of three (3) years in a surface and/or underground mining environment required
  • Excellent verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal skills required
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously required
  • Excellent computer skills (e.g. MS Office and data management programs) required
  • Excellent safety record with ability to demonstrate safety leadership required

Nice To Haves

  • Supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Proficient in analyzing and interpreting analytical and monitoring data, with an emphasis on water quality and geochemistry preferred
  • Familiarity with compliance systems and ISO 14001 preferred

Responsibilities

  • Lead the comprehensive development and execution of site closure plans, including the completion of any necessary studies and mitigation activities crucial for the successful closure of inactive facilities.
  • Oversee the site's reclamation permits, and effectively manage the reclamation cost model, reclamation surety bonds, and long-term trusts.
  • Oversee the site’s closure related Water Pollution Control permit compliance and reporting program
  • Coordinate with site personnel and the regional NGM permitting team to successfully facilitate federal and state permitting actions including completion of cultural, wildlife, and other baseline studies.
  • Successfully implement and manage Federal environmental compliance requirements.
  • Interpret monitoring data related to water quality, geochemistry, vegetation, and other material characterization.
  • Lead and develop Environmental Engineers and Technicians
  • Engage with regulatory agencies and other external stakeholders.
  • Direct wildlife surveying and reporting activities for sensitive species.
  • Oversee the noxious weed abatement program.
  • Support the spatial data management (GIS) program for the Department.
  • Ensure conformance with the company Mine Closure Standard.
  • Assist with training NGM employees and contractors regarding safety and environmental requirements.
  • Budget management including development, forecasting and tracking of program costs
  • Coordinate business partner procurement processes and direct awarded project activities as required.
  • Responsible for periodic, after-hours on-call response to environmental incidents, as needed.
  • This position requires the ability to regularly walk over uneven, sloped, rocky, wet or icy ground and the ability to lift 40 or more pounds consistently and safely.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
