About The Position

WSP is seeking a Senior Environmental Aquatic Scientist to join their San Diego Environmental Water Group. The role involves supporting regulatory compliance programs in the marine and aquatic environment, with a focus on field data collection, stormwater management, and scientific diving. The ideal candidate will have strong field, writing, and data QA/QC skills, along with experience in Southern California's environmental regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field
  • 5 to 7 years of experience working as an environmental scientist and completing environmental surveys, fieldwork, habitat and impact assessments, and/or construction monitoring
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience
  • Highly capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC
  • Developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most effective solutions to accomplish objectives of assigned projects
  • Experience in field collection and recording/analyzing collected data

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree is preferred
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) preferred
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training desired

Responsibilities

  • Participating in field collection teams with senior scientists and other staff level scientists
  • Collecting sediment, water, and biological samples and data
  • Conducting scientific dive operations including sample collection, visual surveys, and equipment deployment and recovery
  • Operating field collection equipment and boats, including trailering
  • Recording field measurements and preparing field reports
  • Managing and analyzing field collected data
  • Analyzing laboratory chemistry results
  • Preparing report text, maps, data tables, and summaries, and conducting statistical analyses of field collected and laboratory data
  • Ensuring Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) related to data and report review
  • Conducting mid-level data analysis, technical reporting, and scientific writing
  • Understanding local and national environmental regulations
  • Field and Project Management
  • Participating in regional scientific organizations
