About The Position

Specified Technologies Inc. (STI) is the industry technology leader in firestopping products. Established in 1990 and headquartered in Branchburg, New Jersey, STI has grown to serve multiple markets and geographies. With approximately 230 employees, the company is committed to innovation, safety, and performance in passive fire protection. We’re seeking a Senior Engineering Services Specialist to provide advanced technical support, system recommendations, and construction‑focused guidance to STI’s customers and internal teams. This role is ideal for experienced professionals from construction‑adjacent fields—building products, MEP trades, general contracting, insulation, life safety, or specialty construction—who bring strong technical judgment and practical building knowledge, even if firestop experience is new. Based in Somerville, NJ (Corporate Headquarters), you’ll deepen your firestop expertise through hands‑on collaboration with STI engineers, subject‑matter experts, and the AutoCAD team. You’ll apply your industry background to interpret complex drawings, assess challenging field conditions, and deliver accurate, engineering‑driven solutions. As you advance, you’ll build the specialized firestop knowledge needed for high‑complexity applications and prepare for certifications such as the UL‑TEDP exam. This role offers a path into advanced engineering, field applications leadership, or technical management within STI.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in a construction-adjacent role such as: Commercial construction, Building materials, General contracting or specialty contracting, Life-safety systems, MEP coordination, Architectural or engineering support
  • Firestop experience not required but a strong interest in learning is essential.
  • Strong ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • AutoCAD experience preferred (ability to interpret is required; drafting can be taught).
  • Working knowledge of commercial construction methods, sequencing, and jobsite realities.
  • Proficiency with MS Office; comfortable learning internal tools and technical databases.
  • Clear, confident communicator who excels in a fast-paced technical support environment.
  • Analytical thinker with a customer-service mindset.
  • Able to manage multiple inquiries simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and follow‑through.

Responsibilities

  • Customer & Technical Support Provide expert-level technical guidance via phone, email, and chat to contractors, architects, engineers, inspectors, and distribution partners.
  • Apply real-world construction understanding to recommend the correct STI systems for field conditions, sequencing constraints, and code requirements.
  • Solve higher‑complexity problems by interpreting specifications, submittals, RFI responses, and field reports.
  • Support jobsite personnel with practical, implementation‑focused recommendations that ensure compliant, efficient installations.
  • Drawing, Documentation & Technical Interpretation Review and interpret architectural / MEP plans, wall schedules, penetration layouts, and detail sheets.
  • Use AutoCAD to analyze and adapt details into accurate, compliant system solutions (advanced CAD drafting experience not required—interpretation and adaptation are key).
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of all recommendations, system selections, and decision paths.
  • Product & System Expertise Become a subject‑matter expert on STI products, UL systems, engineering judgments, material interactions, and construction practices.
  • Translate competitor product/system knowledge into accurate cross-references and value‑based recommendations.
  • Recognize patterns in recurring field conditions and contribute insights toward product development or system optimization.
  • Internal Collaboration Work closely with engineering, chemistry, product management, field operations, and sales to resolve unique or complex technical situations.
  • Provide field-informed feedback to engineering and product teams to improve STI systems and support continuous innovation.
  • Participate in cross‑department initiatives where construction experience enhances solution quality.
