We are seeking an experienced leader to oversee both Backend Engineering (Java/Spring Boot microservices) and Cloud Infrastructure/DevOps. This hybrid role blends strategic leadership with hands-on technical credibility. You’ll provide architectural direction, set engineering standards, mentor tech leads, and ensure delivery at scale while working closely with Product, Data, and Security to align technology initiatives with Lingo’s business and compliance objectives. This is an opportunity to shape the foundation of a platform that will support millions of users globally.

Requirements

  • 10+ years combined experience in backend engineering (Java/Spring Boot) and cloud infrastructure/DevOps.
  • 4+ years in technical leadership or engineering management roles.
  • Proven success in implementing distributed microservices architectures.
  • Experience with event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of database scaling strategies.
  • Experience with multi-region cloud deployments with enterprise security requirements.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD automation and deployment strategies.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and IaC (Terraform or equivalent).
  • Experience with observability, monitoring, and performance tuning.
  • Strong track record of leading teams and delivering enterprise-grade systems at scale.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in digital health, IoT, or other regulated industries (HIPAA, GDPR).
  • Familiarity with distributed analytics platforms (Databricks, Spark).
  • Experience defining SLAs/SLOs and leading capacity planning for high-throughput workloads.
  • Strong stakeholder communication skills; ability to present technical strategy to executives and cross-functional partners.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a growing team of backend engineers and DevOps specialists, balancing coaching, technical guidance, and delivery oversight.
  • Maintain a 'hands-on' presence (20%) to review architectures, debug critical issues, and validate technical approaches.
  • Direct the design and delivery of distributed microservices, REST/GraphQL APIs, and event-driven systems.
  • Ensure enterprise-grade code quality, secure coding practices, and scalable design patterns (DDD, reactive programming).
  • Drive performance optimization, ensuring p95/p99 latency targets are consistently met.
  • Define standards for Infrastructure-as-Code, Kubernetes orchestration (multi-region, HA clusters), and service meshes.
  • Oversee CI/CD pipelines and deployment strategies (blue/green, canary), leveraging modern toolchains.
  • Ensure observability and performance monitoring across the stack (metrics, logging, tracing).
  • Partner with Security to ensure compliance with enterprise and regulatory standards.
  • Partner with Product, Data, and Security leaders to shape platform roadmaps.
  • Identify capability gaps, lead architectural reviews, and drive build vs. buy decisions.
  • Balance scalability, reliability, security, and cost optimization across cloud deployments.
