About The Position

The Senior Engineering Associate position in the System Planning section of the City of Tucson’s Water Department uses hydraulic modeling software to review water design documents for their compliance with state and city standards. System Planning engineers focus their review on hydraulic capacity. This position involves daily use of InfoWater Pro hydraulic modeling software as well as Microsoft Excel and Power Bi. This position works closely with water Operations and Maintenance staff as well as their data. Work is performed under the supervision of the Engineering Manager. This position does not supervise.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Two (2) years of related work experience.
  • EIT certification or ability to obtain certification within a year of hire. Required by City for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or closely related engineering field. Additional preference given to water or hydraulics concentration.
  • Education or experience with hydraulic modeling software such as EPANET or InfoWater Pro.
  • Education or experience in data management/visualization software such as Sequel Server Management Studio, Power BI or Excel Data Models.
  • Education or experience with ArcGIS Pro.
  • Education, experience with Water Distribution System Operations. Operator Certification is a bonus.
  • Education or experience with fire suppression systems in any fashion.

Responsibilities

  • Calibrates hydraulic models and uses them to evaluate the water distribution system’s hydraulic performance to ensure existing water facilities are performing as designed. This includes scripting and visualization of SCADA and other data.
  • Prepares detailed review reports, memos, and correspondence outlining required system upgrades.
  • Provides customer service by modeling fire flows to determine if sprinklers are needed for home permits.
  • Uses design standards to evaluate the size of existing or future water assets (pipes, tanks, boosters, and valves). Makes recommendations for said facility sizing. This includes reviewing pump curves for a booster pumps ability to deliver water over a span of existing or proposed pressures.
  • Works with various types of data including SCADA data for system pressures and flows. Minimal field work includes placing transducers on fire hydrants or water facilities to monitor pressure.
  • Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned. All duties and responsibilities listed are subject to change.
